Starting today (9th December) until 11th December, the 3rd International Film Festival & Awards‧Macao (referred to as “IFFAM” or the “Film Festival”) is staging the IFFAM Industry Hub at the Macao Cultural Centre and the Macao Museum of Art for three days, aspiring to create an effective exchange platform for worldwide film industry professionals and make partnerships happen for film project development, production, distribution, investment and so forth. Besides existing initiatives including the IFFAM Project Market and Macao Forum, the IFFAM Industry Hub offers a new programme of Work-in-progress Presentations this year. Filmmakers are invited to present their completed or soon-to-be-completed film projects and join one-on-one meetings. The programme helps to align these film projects with partnership opportunities, from securing funds for completion of filming and post-production, film distribution to screening in film festivals. 

IFFAM Project Market helps film productions come true

Award winners to be unveiled on 11th December 

As a key highlight of the Industry Hub, the IFFAM Project Market helps international film talent in search of investors, distributors or partners for their new film projects. A platform is set for them to engage in business matching and tap into partnership opportunities. The IFFAM Project Market has aggregated 14 promising film projects this year including 10 genre projects, two auteur projects and two Macao projects. Their places of origin are as follows: Singapore/Korea, Spain, New Zealand, Argentina, Mainland China, Korea/New Zealand, United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Mainland China/United States, Netherlands/Mainland China/Hong Kong, United Kingdom/Hong Kong, Hong Kong/Macao as well as Mainland China/Macao. 

The two Macao projects are “Wonderland” and “Lost Paradise”, directed by Chao Koi Wang and Tracy Choi respectively. The 14 thoughtfully-chosen film projects cover a variety of genres including revenge, action, thriller, drama, science fiction and so forth. While many wonderful works of new film directors are included, seven of the film projects were directed by female directors, bespeaking the vigor and abundant visages of works created by female filmmakers in the contemporary world of films. Over half of the film projects lined up by the Project Market in the past reached partnerships for substantial productions, and many of them will soon embark on the process of filming. 

The 14 teams each presented their film projects to industry delegates in the Public Pitching session held today (9th December) at the IFFAM Project Market. Invited film industry professionals (buyer/seller/distributor/investor) will meet individually with directors/producers of the film projects at the Project Meetings session for potential cooperation.

The 14 film projects will contend for the Best Project Award, Best Co-production Award, Creative Excellence Award and Macao Spirit Award, equivalent to a total cash prize of 40,000 US dollars. Winners will be unveiled in the IFFAM Project Market Awards Ceremony on 11th December.

Newly-launched WIP Presentations help film projects to secure funds for completion 

Tailored for projects at the post-production stage to be presented to industry delegates, the newly-launched programme of Work-in-Progress (WIP) Presentations assists these projects to secure sufficient funds for completion of filming and post-production, meet with distribution agents, and explore cooperation opportunities such as screening in film festivals. The programme is set to raise awareness about these projects in the circle of films. The three film projects selected for the Work-in-Progress Presentations include “The Long Walk” directed by Mattie Do, “Gundala” directed by Joko Anwar and “Detention” directed by John Hsu. “The Long Walk” was one of the film projects lined up by the IFFAM Project Market in 2016. 

Macao Forum unleashes new inspirations 

In the Macao Forum to unfold tomorrow (10th December), film industry professionals will convene for a series of closed-door discussion sessions on the following topics – “The SVOD Wars: How will our films benefit?”, “The Crazy Rich Asians Effect” and “Independent Distribution: A Reality Check”. The closed-door sessions will enable industry delegates from diverse backgrounds to enlighten each other with new ideas and varying perspectives in a light atmosphere. Following the Forum, all participants of the Industry Hub are welcome to join the Forum Presentation which will highlight the fruits of the discussions.
