Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in Macao totalled 241,412 as at end-August 2020, up by 1.2% year-on-year. Light automobiles (110,124) and heavy motorcycles (101,176) rose by 1.6% and 2.8% year-on-year respectively, whereas light motorcycles (22,754) dropped by 6.8%. New registration of motor vehicles in August decreased by 4.6% year-on-year to 1,070, with that of light automobiles (395) falling by 2.5% while that of heavy motorcycles (658) rising by 3.6%. In the first eight months of 2020, new registration of motor vehicles went down by 4.2% year-on-year to 7,633. Number of traffic accidents in August totalled 959, with 331 injuries. In the first eight months of 2020, there were 6,088 traffic accidents, involving 2,193 victims and 3 of them were killed.
Cross-border vehicular traffic in August slid by 50.0% year-on-year to 229,287 trips. Attributable to the adjustment to vehicle clearance measures, light automobile trips surged by 261.7% month-to-month to 203,299 in August; yet, the figure represented a year-on-year decrease of 49.9%. Besides, heavy truck trips dropped by 12.7% year-on-year to 25,850. In the first eight months of 2020, cross-border vehicular traffic reduced by 65.3% year-on-year to 1,221,812 trips. On the other hand, gross weight of containerized cargo by land in August grew by 18.5% year-on-year to 2,489 tonnes, with 57.7% of cargo (1,436 tonnes) passing through the Checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. In the first eight months of 2020, gross weight of containerized cargo by land rose by 30.8% year-on-year to 15,952 tonnes.
Gross weight of port containerized cargo fell by 17.8% year-on-year to 10,523 tonnes in August, owing to a slip of 83.5% in cargo handled at the Ká-Hó Harbour (1,072 tonnes); meanwhile, cargo shipped through the Inner Harbour (9,451 tonnes) went up by 49.7%. In the first eight months of 2020, gross weight of port containerized cargo decreased by 27.0% year-on-year to 72,156 tonnes.
Arriving and departing commercial flights at the Macau International Airport in August declined by 93.6% year-on-year to 426 trips. Air cargo totalled 2,486 tonnes, a drop of 28.6% year-on-year; gross weight of inward cargo (354 tonnes), outward cargo (1,994 tonnes) and transit cargo (137 tonnes) shrank by 41.5%, 17.9% and 69.2% respectively. In the first eight months of 2020, arriving and departing commercial flights fell by 79.7% year-on-year to 9,896 trips, and air cargo reduced by 29.4% to 17,749 tonnes.
As at the end of August 2020, there were 110,177 fixed-line telephone subscribers, down by 7.4% year-on-year. Number of mobile phone subscribers dropped by 21.4% year-on-year to 1,638,576, owing to a 36.8% decrease in stored-value GSM card subscribers (817,991). Internet subscribers grew by 6.9% year-on-year to 608,800. In August, the duration of internet usage went up by 7.1% year-on-year to 142 million hours. Total duration of internet usage reached 1.09 billion hours in the first eight months of 2020, an increase of 5.3% year-on-year.
