The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, today said Macao was dedicated to pushing forward development of a green economy in the city, making use of opportunities arising from major national strategies.

Speaking at the opening of the 2018 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (MIECF), Mr Chui underlined the Government’s commitment to making Macao a more liveable city, while strengthening environmental protection and encouraging ‘green living’.

He also noted that Macao’s functions as a commercial and trade cooperation service platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries helped reinforce environmental cooperation between international and mainland entities.

In his address, Mr Chui said the Government had been striving to ensure the local community was able to move toward a sustainable development model – one that reinforced regional cooperation – in order to create a better environment and a civilisation that was ecologically sound, a concept that was recently included in the country’s Constitution.

The 2018MIECF event highlighted not only green, circular economy and low-carbon development strategies in the construction of eco-cities, but also the importance of the expansion of ecological civilisations, said Mr Chui.

Since its first edition in 2008, the MIECF hosts and co-organisers had been committed to building up this important platform for green ideas – not only in relation to the Pan-Pearl River Delta area, but also internationally – in order to contribute to transference of environmental technology and to sustainable development around the world.

The 2018MIECF event, taking as its theme “Shaping of Eco-Cities for Inclusive Green Economy”, is being held from 12 to 14 April. MIECF is an annual event that gathers specialists and academics to share their experience in promoting ‘green industry’ and protection of the environment.

The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government hosts the event with special support from: the National Development and Reform Commission; the Ministry of Science and Technology; the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology; and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

It is also co-organised by the other provincial and regional governments in the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region, namely those of Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and the Hong Kong SAR.
