The working group led by Legal Affairs Bureau (DSAJ), Civic and Municipal Affairs Burea (IACM), and Consumer Council will hold a seminar on ‘Consumer protection laws of the cross-strait four regions’. Consumer organizations from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan have been invited to participate in the seminar to introduce the development of their well-developed consumer protection laws and to exchange ideas and experiences. The working group hopes to take this opportunity to learn from neighboring countries and regions for the revision of the consumer protection law in Macao.

The working group welcomes representatives from all industries and the public to express their comments through different channels during the two-month ‘Review on Consumer Protection Law’ consultation period. The working group has made analysis and comparisons on the consumer protection laws of mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan when drafting the consultation paper, the group therefore invited China Consumers’ Association, Hong Kong Consumer Council, and Consumers’ Foundation of Taiwan to participate in the seminar to be held on 1 August regarding the topic ‘Consumer protection laws of the cross-strait four regions’. The working group indicates that revision works have been made on the consumer protection laws in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan in recent years. The newly-revised consumer protection law of China, for example, has greatly intensified the power of consumer organizations and consumers’ rights to claim remedy. Further, both Hong Kong and Taiwan have also revised certain laws and regulations in relation to maintaining market fairness and safety. The working group hopes to learn from the experiences from the three regions, thus helping the revision work on local consumer protection law.

Legislative Assembly member, Associate Dean of Faculty of Law of University of Macau, Professor Tong Io Cheng, has been invited to attend the mentioned seminar on ‘Consumer protection laws of the cross-strait four regions’. The seminar will be held on 1 August at 3PM, at the Tourism Activities Centre. Members from all industries and the public are welcome to join. For inquiry, please call 8988-9315.
