Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total number of licensed motor vehicles reached 232,586 at the end of June 2014, up by 5% year-on-year, of which motorcycles and light private cars accounted for 52% and 41% respectively. New registration of motor vehicles increased by 9% year-on-year to 9,819 in the first half year of 2014.
In the first half year of 2014, number of traffic accidents totalled 7,517 cases, up by 5% year-on-year, resulting in 2,540 casualties and 7 of them were killed.
Cross-border vehicle traffic reached 2,413,421 vehicle trips in the first half year of 2014, up by 6% year-on-year; vehicle traffic through the Border Gate shared 80%. Passenger ferry between Macao and Hong Kong and between Macao and Mainland China totalled 69,968 ferry trips, an increase of 1% year-on-year, with the Ferry Terminal at the Outer Harbour predominating with 47,148 ferry trips.
The Macao International Airport had 23,443 commercial flights in the first half year, an increase of 8% year-on-year, and the major routes were Mainland China (40% of total) and Taiwan (25%); besides, flights between Macao and Vietnam soared to 938, up 163%. Helicopter flights between Macao and Hong Kong and between Macao and Mainland China totalled 7,764, down by 5% year-on-year.
Seaborne container throughput totalled 68,904 TEU in the first half year of 2014, equivalent to 48,134 containers handled, up by 16% and 12% respectively year-on-year. Gross weight of seaborne containerized cargo (123,019 tonnes) and containerized cargo by land (12,042 tonnes) increased by 40% and 10% respectively year-on-year.
Outward air cargo totalled 7,146 tonnes in the first half year of 2014, similar to that a year earlier; meanwhile, inward air cargo increased by 6% year-on-year to 3,167 tonnes. Taiwan remained the major origin and destination of inward and outward air cargo, accounting for 52% and 43% of the respective total. Transit air cargo increased by 11% year-on-year to 2,651 tonnes, mainly due to increase in transit air cargo from Taiwan and Thailand.
At the end of June 2014, number of fixed-line telephone users decreased by 3% year-on-year to 156,169. Meanwhile, number of mobile telephone users increased by 10% to 1,688,231. As regards internet services, number of subscribers totalled 284,830 and the cumulative duration of usage reached 462 million hours in the first half year of 2014, up by 18% and 20% respectively year-on-year.
