Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that number of enterprises engaged in gaming activities stayed at 9 in 2020. Total receipts of the gaming sector slid by 78.4% year-on-year to MOP63.94 billion, on account of a substantial decline in the number of visitor arrivals amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. Receipts from gaming (MOP60.32 billion) and rental (MOP38.00 million) fell by 79.4% and 29.1% year-on-year respectively; in addition, interest receipts (MOP2.65 billion) recorded a decrease of 1.9%.

Total expenditure of the gaming sector amounted to MOP46.42 billion, down by 60.6% year-on-year. Expenditure on Purchase of Goods, Commission Paid & Customer Rebate, which used to take up the largest share of total expenditure, dive by 83.3% year-on-year to MOP9.43 billion ascribable to a fall in gaming receipts; its share of total expenditure declined from 47.9% in 2019 to 20.3% in 2020. Operating Expenses descended by 68.8% year-on-year to MOP9.95 billion, with its share of total expenditure shrinking from 27.1% to 21.4%; among which, expenses on complimentary goods/services provided to customers such as hotel accommodation and food & beverage (MOP4.64 billion) plunged by 74.5%. Compensation of Employees went down by 12.5% year-on-year to MOP19.71 billion, and yet its share of total expenditure expanded from 19.1% in 2019 to 42.5%. On the other hand, Non-operating Expenses grew by 6.5% year-on-year to MOP7.33 billion, driven by a 23.2% growth in interest paid (MOP3.88 billion).

In 2020, Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy contracted by 79.6% year-on-year to MOP41.85 billion. Gross Surplus of the sector sank by 87.9% year-on-year to MOP22.13 billion; Gross Surplus Ratio (36.1%) dipped by 26.1 percentage points, while Gross Surplus-Expenditure Ratio (56.6%) tumbled by 108.0 percentage points. Meanwhile, Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the sector totalled MOP1.88 billion in 2020, a decrease of 37.5% year-on-year.
