According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, broad money supply rebounded in November with a stable share of patacas. Meanwhile, resident deposits increased from a month ago whereas loans to residents posted a decrease.
Money supply
Currency in circulation remained virtually stable while demand deposits rose 6.8%. M1 thus increased 5.0% from one month earlier. Meanwhile, quasi-monetary liabilities grew 1.0%. The sum of these two items, i.e. M2, rebounded 1.4% to MOP695.3 billion. On an annual basis, M1 dropped 5.3% whereas M2 grew 3.3%. The shares of pataca (MOP), Hong Kong dollar (HKD), renminbi (RMB) and United States dollar (USD) in M2 were 33.9%, 48.0%, 4.6% and 11.6% respectively.
Deposits
Resident deposits went up by 1.1% from the preceding month to MOP674.5 billion while non-resident deposits also rose 1.0% to MOP325.7 billion. On the other hand, public sector deposits with the banking sector dropped 1.2% to MOP259.1 billion. As a result, total deposits in the banking sector increased 0.6% from a month earlier to MOP1,259.3 billion. The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total deposits were 19.2%, 48.6%, 4.7% and 23.8% respectively.
Loans
Domestic loans to the private sector fell 0.7% from a month ago to MOP538.4 billion while external loans also dropped 4.1% to MOP657.5 billion. As a result, total loans to the private sector went down by 2.6% from a month earlier to MOP1,196.0 billion. The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total loans were 16.6%, 41.9%, 10.0% and 28.5% respectively.
Operating ratios
At end-November, the loan-to-deposit ratio for the resident sector fell from 58.4% at end-October to 57.7%. Meanwhile, the ratio for both the resident and non-resident sectors decreased from 98.1% to 95.0%. The one-month and three-month current assets to liabilities ratios stood at 64.0% and 58.4% respectively. Concurrently, the non-performing loan ratio increased from 0.38% at end-October to 0.40%.
