Consumer Report 334 includes report on pre-packed coffee sugar and calories contents

To remind consumers to avoid too much sugar intake, the Consumer Council compared 20 samples of pre-packed canned and bottled coffee beverages to analyze their contents of sugar and calories listed on the labels. Details of the analysis is now published in the latest issue no. 334 Consumer Report. The latest magazine also includes a summary of the cross-border cooperation between the Consumer Council and consumer organizations in the Mainland.

Ingredients labels on pre-packed food and beverage products are important information to consumers in choosing safe and healthy foods, the Council examined labels on food products from the market to review their contents of sugar and calories, etc. Consumers are suggested to check and pay attention to ingredients label and adopt healthy eating habits.

Huge differences in sugar contents shown on product labels

According to the labels on 20 different brands and batches of pre-packed coffee, huge differences in sugar contents is found. For the sample with the highest sugar contents, there is 11.2g sugar contained per 100ml volume and the sugar contents in one bottle of beverage exceed the strong recommendation of daily sugar intake of 50g of the World Health Organization; the total calories of the previous mentioned sample equals to about 200g of white rice.

Consumers should pay attention to the ingredients and contents listed on the labels to make smarter and healthier choices. Consumers are also suggested to take the current analysis report for reference when buying this kind of pre-packed coffee drinks.

Success in cross-border cooperation in Greater Bay Area

The Council and consumers organizations in the Mainland cooperated in regard to cross-border mediation and arbitration, as well as the “Joint prevention mechanism for Macao citizens purchasing real estate in the Mainland” in the first half of this year to safeguard the consumer rights of tourists and local citizens, and to boost consumers’ confidence in interactive consumption between the two regions. Features of the cooperation are included in this issue of Consumer Report.

“Consumer Online” efficient and easy-to-use

To encourage the use of “Consumer Online”, the Consumer Council has affixed QR code stickers and posters of “Consumer Online” in various areas of Macao, including shops and residential buildings. The Council has also organized talks to local communities to elaborate the advantages and functions of this efficient and convenient e-service platform to consumers.

Online access to various contents

The “Consumer Alert” featured in this issue introduces the rights and responsibilities of consumers in prepayment consumption, it also reminds consumers to consider carefully before concluding a prepayment consumption contract, and to check and understand the terms of the contract.
