According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, broad money supply retreated in April with a stable share of patacas. Meanwhile, resident deposits decreased from a month ago whereas loans to residents posted an increase.

Money supply

Currency in circulation rose 0.5% whereas demand deposits dropped 3.0%. M1 thus decreased 2.1% from one month earlier.  On the other hand, quasi-monetary liabilities edged up by 0.1%.  The sum of these two items, i.e. M2, fell 0.2% to MOP698.1 billion.  On an annual basis, M1 dropped 2.5% whereas M2 grew 2.3%. The shares of pataca (MOP), Hong Kong dollar (HKD), renminbi (RMB) and United States dollar (USD) in M2 were 34.8%, 50.0%, 5.4% and 8.0% respectively.

Deposits

Resident deposits decreased 0.2% from the preceding month to MOP679.1 billion whereas non-resident deposits rose 1.9% to MOP361.2 billion.  On the other hand, public sector deposits with the banking sector edged down by 0.1% to MOP263.9 billion.  As a result, total deposits in the banking sector increased 0.4% from a month earlier to MOP1,304.2 billion.  The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total deposits were 19.1%, 51.1%, 5.7% and 21.2% respectively.

Loans

Domestic loans to the private sector grew 0.2% from a month ago to MOP541.4 billion while external loans also rose 4.7% to MOP738.9 billion. As a result, total loans to the private sector went up by 2.8% from a month earlier to MOP1,280.3 billion.  The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total loans were 15.8%, 37.9%, 14.5% and 28.7% respectively.

Operating ratios

At end-April,the loan-to-deposit ratio for the resident sector rose from 57.2% at end-March to 57.4%.  Meanwhile, the ratio for both the resident and non-resident sectors increasedfrom 95.9% to 98.2%.  The one-month and three-month current assets to liabilities ratios stood at 61.4% and 61.5% respectively.  Concurrently, the non-performing loan ratio decreased from 0.38% at end-March to 0.37%.
