Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 120 hotels & guesthouses were open for business in December 2020, a decrease of 3 year-on-year; number of available guest rooms dropped by 8.2% to 35,000. Data on hotels & guesthouses used for medical observation were excluded in the compilation of the results. The average occupancy rate of guest rooms was 53.1%, representing a month-to-month growth of 9.1 percentage points and yet a year-on-year decrease of 38.9 percentage points.
A total of 579,000 guests checked into hotels & guesthouses in December, indicating a decline of 52.5% year-on-year. Guests from mainland China fell by 40.0% year-on-year to 492,000, while local guests increased by 15.7% to 61,000. The average length of stay of guests went up by 0.1 night year-on-year to 1.6 nights.
For the whole year of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms sank by 62.2 percentage points year-on-year to 28.6%. Meanwhile, the number of guests of hotels & guesthouses totalled 3,874,000, a decline of 72.5% year-on-year. Guests from mainland China dwindled by 71.9% year-on-year to 2,760,000 (71.2% of total), whereas local guests rose by 3.2% to 630,000. The average length of stay of guests stood at 1.7 nights, up by 0.2 night year-on-year.
There were no inbound package tour visitors in December, while the number of visitors joining local tours was 3,000. In addition, outbound residents using services of travel agencies totalled 13,000. For the whole year of 2020, package tour visitors added up to 263,000, a decline of 96.8% year-on-year; outbound residents using services of travel agencies tumbled by 92.9% to 125,000, and 73,000 (58.6%) of them went to mainland China.
