Variety of events in Macao to mark 71st National Day

The Government will host on Thursday (1 October) a series of activities, including a flag raising ceremony and a reception, to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

At 8am on National Day, 1 October, there will be a flag raising ceremony held at Golden Lotus Square. The ceremony is to be attended by the Chief Executive, Mr Ho Iat Seng; and representatives from, respectively, the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR); the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR; and the Macao Garrison of the People’s Liberation Army; as well as by heads of the Macao legislature and judiciary; principal officials; and people from across the community.

The flag raising ceremony will be broadcast live on television channels of Teledifusão de Macau (TDM).

The Chief Executive will then attend a National Day reception held at China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex at 9.30am.

Other celebrations on Thursday to mark the anniversary of the People’s Republic of China will include: a fireworks show – themed “Full Moon National Day Fireworks Celebration by Macao and Hengqin” – is to take place on the waterfront near the Macau Tower at 9pm.

The fireworks displays will be broadcast live on TDM. Members of the public have the option to enjoy the extravaganza from home in order to avoid social gatherings under the COVID-19 alert.

“Performance to celebrate the 71st Anniversary of the National Day of the People’s Republic of China and the Haojiang Moonlight Night – Ethnic Dance Drama Awakening Lion” will be staged at 7.30pm on Thursday, at Macao Cultural Centre. The dance drama reflects a spiritual “awakening” materialised in the figure of “lion”, narrating the story of two teenage performers of lion dance from self-awakening to growth and manifesting the spirit of the Chinese nation.
