Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the 5 hospitals in Macao provided a total of 1,628 in-patient beds in 2019, up by 24 year-on-year. Number of in-patients went up by 3.9% year-on-year to 62,000, with the average hospital stay rising by 0.2 day to 7.4 days. With the increases in number of in-patients and average hospital stay, the occupany rate of in-patient beds grew by 3.9 percentage points to 78.3%.

Hospital out-patient attendances rose by 5.8% year-on-year to 1,892,000, of which consultations in Internal Medicine (312,000) accounted for 16.5%, followed by those in Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation (252,000), which took up 13.3%.

Emergency attendances rose by 5.2% year-on-year to 489,000, with those in the Macao Peninsula (383,000) and Taipa (107,000) increasing by 5.9% and 3.0% respectively. Meanwhile,  there were about 20,000 cases of surgical operations in 2019, up by 6.3% year-on-year; surgical operations in Ophthalmology (3,997) rose by 40.4%, representing a growth of over 40% for two consecutive years.

There were 716 primary health care establishments (including public health centres, private clinics, etc.) in 2019. Total number of consultations increased by 4.5% year-on-year to 4,112,000, of which consultations in government health establishments went up by 4.7% to 939,000 and consultations in private clinics rose by 4.4% to 3,173,000. Consultations in General Practice (1,227,000) constituted 29.8% of the total, followed by those in Chinese Medicine (1,143,000) and Stomatology/Odontology (277,000), comprising 27.8% and 6.7% respectively.

A total of 416,000 doses of vaccine were administered in hospitals and primary health care establishments in 2019, up by 9.5% year-on-year; vaccinations against Influenza totalled 161,000 doses.

Number of blood donations rose by 3.9% year-on-year to 15,441, with 3,369 first-time blood donations. A total of 11,150 persons donated blood in 2019, an increase of 3.6% year-on-year.

According to the administrative data provided by the Health Bureau, there were 1,808 doctors and 2,491 nurses in Macao in 2019, up by 3.1% and 1.1% respectively year-on-year. Number of doctors and nurses per 1,000 population was 2.7 and 3.7 respectively.
