Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for January 2020 amounted to MOP1.15 billion, down by 24.8% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP996 million) decreased by 28.3%, with that of Diamond & diamond jewellery and Watches tumbling by 76.4% and 44.5% respectively. Value of domestic exports (MOP154 million) rose by 9.8%, with that of Garments surging by 428.0%. Total merchandise import slid by 3.6% year-on-year to MOP8.48 billion, of which imports of Motor cars & motorcycles and Mobile phones declined by 58.3% and 33.3% respectively; meanwhile, imports of Beauty, cosmetic & skin-care products and Handbags & wallets expanded by 55.2% and 22.3% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit in January totalled MOP7.33 billion.

Analysed by destination, merchandise export to mainland China dropped by 35.1% year-on-year to MOP108 million in January 2020, of which exports to the Nine Provinces of the Pan Pearl River Delta (MOP98 million) declined by 39.2%. Exports to Hong Kong (MOP730 million) and the EU (MOP16 million) fell by 35.0% and 3.8% respectively year-on-year, whereas exports to the USA (MOP50 million) surged by 84.4%. Exports to the Belt and Road Countries (MOP28 million) increased by 56.2% year-on-year, while exports to the Portuguese-speaking Countries (MOP29 thousand) plunged by 76.3%. Exports of Textiles & garments jumped by 79.7% year-on-year to MOP127 million while exports of Non-textiles dropped by 29.9% to MOP1.02 billion.

By place of origin, merchandise import from mainland China (MOP2.73 billion) decreased by 12.8% year-on-year in January 2020. Imports from the EU (MOP2.66 billion) and the Belt and Road Countries (MOP1.84 billion) increased by 9.8% and 121.4% respectively, while imports from the Portuguese-speaking Countries (MOP69 million) dropped by 27.3%. Analysed by place of consignment, merchandise import from mainland China slid by 7.7% year-on-year to MOP1.15 billion, of which imports from the Nine Provinces of the Pan Pearl River Delta (MOP1.13 billion) fell by 6.8%. Imports of Consumer goods went up by 1.8% to MOP6.28 billion, with imports of Beauty, cosmetic & skin-care products (MOP788 million) and Handbags & wallets (MOP549 million) rising by 55.2% and 22.3% respectively. Imports of Fuels & lubricants (MOP567 million) and Mobile phones (MOP445 million) declined by 3.9% and 33.3% respectively, whereas imports of Construction materials (MOP150 million) rose by 9.1%.

External merchandise trade totalled MOP9.63 billion in January 2020, down by 6.7% compared with MOP10.32 billion a year earlier.
