MGTO completes Study on Indian visitors in Macao

In pursuit of a wider diversity of visitor source markets from different nationalities, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has carried out a range of studies on visitors from various international markets. This year, the Office has completed the “Study on Indian Visitors in Macao” to gain a deeper understanding of the common attributes and travel behavior of Indian visitors in Macao. The findings will serve as a basis for the Office to implement its destination marketing strategies and initiatives for broader publicity effect towards the Indian market.

The “Study on Indian Visitors in Macao” employed face-to-face surveys with visitors and in-depth interviews with tourism industry operators followed by data analysis. The findings revealed that among the interviewed Indian visitors, over 80% opted for travel to Macao and Hong Kong in one trip; 85% visited Macao for the first time; 55% stayed in Macao for three days and two nights; 47.5% visited Macao for sightseeing, followed by 37% for leisure/vacation. In addition, 71% of interviewees expressed their interest in visiting Macao again in the future, while 96% of them stated that they will recommend others to visit Macao.

MGTO strives to expand the diversity of international visitor source markets and the length of visitors’ stay in Macao. India is among Macao’s international visitor markets that hold the greatest potential. From January to November 2019, over 119,000 Indian visitors came to Macao, with 75% of them staying overnight in the city.

In recent years, MGTO has conducted a range of visitor studies targeting different international visitor markets including India, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia. Looking forward, the Office will continue to unfold studies on visitors from different countries and regions in accord with the direction of tourism policies and destination marketing strategies laid out by the Macao Special Administrative Region Government.
