The tropical depression over the northern part of the South China Sea is gradually intensifying. It is expected to move northwestward, and it will approach the west coast of Guangdong and Hainan Island on Aug 1st. It is expected that the tropical depression will be closest to Macau between afternoon and evening on July 31st at about 300km southwest of Macau. The wind in Macau will intensify, reach strong wind level at Beaufort scale 6-7, and be accompanied by gusts. If the tropical depression takes a more northerly path, the wind in Macau will further intensify.
Under the combined effect of the astronomical tide and the outer circulation of the tropical depression, there will be floodings in Inner Harbour area between 6am and 11am on July 31st. Since the development and the movement of the tropical depression have been slower than predicted, the time period of strong winds and the astronomical tide will be out of sync, and the level of flooding may be lower than expected. However, under the influence of the outer circulation of the tropical depression, flooding will still occur. The public are advised to stay alerted and take precautions against strong winds and storm surge as well as to pay attention to the latest weather information before going outdoors.
Remarks: The probabilities of issuing severe weather warning signals for the next one or two days are provided in the table. Public can learn the possibility of being affected by the tropical cyclone over the specific period of time in Macao so that necessary precautions can be well prepared earlier. Please keep notice of our latest information.
