Lin Xuelei, a graduate of a master’s programme of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), recently won a Master Thesis Awards-Silver Prize at the 2019 New World Mathematical Awards (NWMA) held at Tsinghua University in Beijing. This is the first time a scholar from Macao has won this award.
Jointly founded by the New World Development Company Limited and the world-renowned mathematician Prof Shing-Tung Yau in 2007, the NWMA is the highest mathematical award for Chinese maths students. Members of the selection committee are all leading mathematicians. The selection of awardees is conducted every year, but the award presentation ceremony is held every three years. At this year’s ceremony, only four Chinese students received the Master Thesis Awards-Silver Prize, with no awardees for the Gold Prize.
Lin also received a second prize in the outstanding student paper category at the 14th annual conference of the East Asia Section of Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
