Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 3,101 establishments were operating in the Transport, Storage & Communications Sector in 2017, representing an increase of 108 year-on-year. Total number of persons engaged rose by 8.8% to 22,045, with employees accounting for 78.6%. Receipts and expenditure of the sector amounted to MOP 29.49 billion and MOP 23.55 billion respectively, up by 5.6% and 6.7% year-on-year. Gross Surplus totalled MOP 6.01 billion, a growth of 5.9%. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy grew by 3.8% to MOP 10.65 billion, while Gross Fixed Capital Formation declined by 39.2% to MOP 985 million. 

Regarding the Transport & Storage Sector, number of establishments increased by 101 year-on-year to 3,054. Number of persons engaged went up by 9.7% to 19,489, with that in Land Transport (8,120) and Supporting & Auxiliary Transport Activities (7,957) rising by 19.1% and 6.1% respectively. Receipts of the sector grew by 11.7% year-on-year to MOP 22.33 billion, which were mainly generated from Passenger Transport (MOP 9.58 billion) and Services Rendered (MOP 8.15 billion), up by 7.9% and 20.3% respectively. Analysed by industry, receipts from Supporting & Auxiliary Transport Activities (MOP 11.75 billion), Air Transport (MOP 4.27 billion) and Land Transport (MOP 3.78 billion) registered year-on-year growth of 15.5%, 4.2% and 18.9% respectively, whereas those from Sea Transport edged down by 0.9% to MOP 2.53 billion.

Expenditure of the Transport & Storage Sector amounted to MOP 18.66 billion, an increase of 12.0% year-on-year. Expenditure was mainly incurred on Operating Expenses, up by 9.4% to MOP 8.74 billion, of which expenditure on Fuels (MOP 1.97 billion), Rent of Machinery & Equipment (MOP 1.43 billion) and Contractual Services (MOP 1.26 billion) recorded increases of 14.1%, 4.2% and 8.7% respectively. Meanwhile, Purchase of Goods & Services and Commission Paid totalled MOP 6.24 billion, up by 25.1%, whereas Compensation of Employees inched down by 0.4% to MOP 3.68 billion.

Gross Surplus of the Transport & Storage Sector totalled MOP 3.65 billion, up by 9.7% year-on-year; Gross Value Added rose by 4.4% to MOP 7.33 billion. On the other hand, Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the sector declined by 46.5% year-on-year to MOP 473 million on account of the disposal of fixed assets such as aircrafts by Air Transport establishments in 2017, as well as a decrease in acquisition of vehicles by establishments engaging in Land Transport and Supporting & Auxiliary Transport Activities.

As regards the Communications Sector, number of operating establishments increased by 7 year-on-year to 47, with 2,556 persons engaged, up by 2.5%. Receipts of the sector totalled MOP 7.16 billion, down by 9.7% year-on-year. Analysed by industry, receipts from Telecommunications Services fell by 12.9% to MOP 6.44 billionas a result of decreases of 6.3% and 18.4% in the respective receipts of Communications Services (MOP 3.44 billion) and Sales of Goods (MOP 2.63 billion) of the industry. Meanwhile, the sector recorded an expenditure of MOP 4.89 billion, down by 9.4% year-on-year. Among the expenditure items, Purchase of Goods & Services and Commission Paid (MOP 3.04 billion) and Operating Expenses (MOP 881 million) dropped by 14.8% and 4.8% respectively, whereas Compensation of Employees (MOP 968 million) rose by 7.2%. Gross Surplus (MOP 2.36 billion) and Gross Value Added (MOP 3.32 billion) of the Communications Sector registered year-on-year growth of 0.6% and 2.4% respectively. However, Gross Fixed Capital Formation of the sector declined by 30.5% to MOP 512 million in view of a decrease in acquisition of fixed assets such as machinery & equipment and shops.
