The latest issue of Consumer Council’s Consumer Report covers surveys on the price labelling of the specialty food industry, and on the hygienic condition of breads and cakes. Details can be found on the Council’s website (www.cosnumer.gov.mo) and the Council’s official WeChat account.

Product prices are crucial to consumers’ decisions, to safeguard the right to information of consumers, the Consumer Council spot-checked over 100 shops in souvenir (specialty foods) industry to see if their products are properly labelled with prices, to check the clarity of price labels, and whether the shops accept payment in foreign currencies and have the necessary exchange rates listed at their shops.

The shop list included 65 “Certified Shops” and 5 “Adherents” respectively, and 29 shops in the industry, the survey result shows that “Certified Shops” and “Adherents” perform better as all of them have their products clearly labelled in price, and have other required information clearly shown to consumers.

Industry should be aware of price labelling

Specialty foods is one of the important industries in Macao’s economy, good business practices among shops in the industry help to polish Macao’s image as a tourist city. The Council hopes the survey raises the awareness of shops to label their products with prices so that consumers are better protected.

Details of the survey can be found in issue no. 290 Consumer Report.

Breads and cakes fit for hygienic standards

The Consumer Council and Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) co-tested 30 samples of breads and cakes. None of the samples contains pathogenic bacteria but some of them contain high sugar contents and calories. Consumers may refer to the report and suggestions to maintain a healthy diet.
