Starting from tomorrow, visitors entering the Special Administrative Region (SAR) and carrying 120,000 patacas or more (or the equivalent in other currencies) are obliged to report the fact to the Macao authorities.

The law regarding the Control of Cross-Boundary Transport of Currency and Bearer Negotiable Instruments takes effect on 1 November 2017. Its implementation aims to prevent, or where necessary, combat money laundering and terrorist financing, in order to ensure the security and stability of Macao's economic system.

Under the law, anyone arriving in Macao in possession of 120,000 patacas or above in cash (or the equivalent in other currencies), or of bearer negotiable instruments – such as traveller’s cheques, cheques, draft, payment orders, and promissory notes – are obliged to fill in a declaration form and use the “Red Channel” at Macao Customs.

Any person departing from the SAR with 120,000 patacas or more (or the equivalent in other currencies) is also required to make a declaration. Failure to do so can render the person liable to a fine ranging from 1,000 patacas to 500,000 patacas.
