The Consumer Council and Food Safety Centre under the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau co-tested ice cream and frozen dessert products, all 30 samples passed the test of microorganisms. Ice creams and frozen desserts are high-calorie and high sugar foods, consumers are suggested to consumer in moderation.

No pathogenic bacteria found in 30 samples

All the 30 samples, including ice pops and ice cream, were tested for their contents of pathogenic bacteria. No bacteria staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, nor Salmonella were found in the samples.

Ice cream and frozen desserts are high-calorie and high in sugar contents, the World Health Organization recommends sugar intake of less than 25g (approximately 5 sugar cubes) per day for an adult having a 2,000 calorie daily diet. The test result shows that half of the samples contain sugar contents of about 20g to 28g per 100g. Consumers should pay special attention to the nutrition of these products and consume in moderation.

Ice cream and frozen dessert are heat sensitive, their quality will be affected and bacteria will grow if temperature is not well-controlled during transfer or storage, The Council reminds consumers to pay attention to the packages of frozen desserts, and check if they have melted before consumption.
