Hosted by the Civil Aviation Authority of Macao SAR (AACM), the “ICAO Regional Workshop on Airport Pavements – Design and Evaluation” is being carried out for three days in Macao, creating a platform for representatives coming from the aeronautical authorities and airports from the United States and Asia, international organizations as well as the personnel from the respective expertise, to understand the latest technology in airport pavements’ design and construction.

The workshop is being held in the convention facilities of Macao Science Centre, from 04 to 06 March 2015. The representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States are the main speakers. In the three-day event, the speakers and the participants will discuss airfield pavement design, construction, maintenance and management; runway surface friction characteristics, evenness and roughness; pavement load classification; major research initiatives on pavement design for heavy aircraft; state practices on overload operations and environmental constraints; new pavement software and technologies development and so on. FAA will also illustrate some case studies, including the instrumentation projects at John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.

The workshop has attracted more than 80 participants who represent the aeronautical authorities, the public works bureau, the academic institutions, the civil engineering laboratory and the airport in Australia, Bangladesh, mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the United States, as well as International Civil Aviation Organization. The Macao SAR participants are composed of the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau, the University of Macau, AACM, CAM-Macau International Airport Company Ltd. and Administration of Airports, Ltd., the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Macau and the Macau Institution of Engineers.

AACM organized the same workshop in Macao in 2011 which drew in many participants from the above entities. The workshop received good feedback with favourable comments from the delegates. Through lectures on theories, discussions among delegates and analysis of case studies, AACM wishes all delegates to learn from each other and exchange experiences on how to deal with the construction problems of the runway. For this reason, the Authority accepted the invitation of ICAO to cooperate with each other on hosting the workshop in Macao.
