Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitor arrivals increased by 5% year-on-year to 2,432,041 in June 2014; same-day visitors accounted for 53% of the total, at 1,297,678.
Growth in visitor arrivals slowed after the increases during the Easter and Labour Day holidays. Analysed by place of residence, visitors from Mainland China totalled 1,597,289, up by 9% year-on-year, coming primarily from Guangdong Province (667,052), Fujian Province (72,061) and Hunan Province (57,960); Mainland visitors travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme rose by 11%, at 672,405. Visitors from Taiwan (85,350), the Republic of Korea (41,786) and Japan (24,208) increased further by 12%, 24% and 25% respectively year-on-year, while those from Hong Kong (513,561) decreased by 8%. Long-haul visitors from the United States (15,317) registered year-on-year increase; on the contrary, visitors from Australia (6,899), Canada (4,422) and the United Kingdom (3,908) marked decrease.
The average length of stay of visitors remained unchanged from a year earlier, at 1.0 day in June 2014; overnight and same-day visitors stayed an average of 1.9 days and 0.2 day respectively.
In the first half year of 2014, visitor arrivals reached 15,283,847, up by 8% year-on-year, and same-day visitors took up 54% of the total. Visitors from Mainland China (+15%), Taiwan (+2%) and the Republic of Korea (+18%) increased year-on-year, while those from Hong Kong (-6%) decreased. Moreover, long-haul visitors from the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom recorded year-on-year growth; however, those from Canada and France registered decline.
