Environmental business professionals from China, Europe and America gathered in Macao to discuss leading technologies in renewable energy, water treatment and environmental protection monitor system at 2009 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (2009 MIECF) today.

At the Green Co-operation Gateway: Environment – Business – Connection “Extending Green Industry Network” Seminar, a part of the ongoing (2009 MIECF), Mr. Ou Jun, Deputy Secretary of Guangdong Association of Environmental Protection, told the participants the development and opportunities of environmental protection industry in Guangdong Province.

Guangdong is not only the most important window for foreign trade in China and also a province with the fastest growing speed on economy. The GDP of Guangdong is 3569.6 billion RMB in 2008, which takes up one ninth of the total GDP of China, he said.

In order to follow out the national policy on environmental protection, Guangdong has actively adopted a host of strategies to develop in a environmental-friendly way, such as applying renewable energy, speeding up water pollution control projects, enforcing strict control of air pollution, enhancing solid waste treatment, strengthening the protection of soil and marine ecology, promoting comprehensive utilization of resources and cleaner production and implementing policies that promote energy-saving and emission reduction.

He also pointed out that Guangdong has taken a leading role on environmental protection within China. As the pace of economic expansion in Guangdong creates a huge demand for innovative environmental protection technologies, Guangdong provides lots of business opportunities for overseas environmental protection firms in the province and the entire Pan-Pearl River Delta Region.

Principal Engineer of Department of Land Environment and Resources in Hainan Province, Mr. Wang Ling, introduced a photochemical purification technique for aquaculture water, which has applied solar radiation photochemical methods. The technique guarantees the quality of the recycled aquaculture water and all aquaculture water can be recycled.

Country Manager of CDM Service Unit China of German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Dr. Markus Schwegler, said that China provided more than 50% of the global CER (Certificated Emission Reductions) and 80% of which had been sold to EU-based entities.

Manager of the Value Engineering Department of GE Water & Process Technologies (Canada), Mr. Arnold Janson, introduced membrane technology, which could turn sewage into drinkable water.

He pointed out that few people could accept the fact that water could be made from treated sewage. In fact, people all around the world are drinking water made from treated sewage.

As a water professional, he said that we should educate the public and promote water reuse. “Water should be judged by its quality, not its history,” he said.

Mr. Ricardo Meireles of Martifer Solar N.V., a European company, introduced his company’s effort in producing renewable energy, such as promoting wind and solar power generating facilities.

Mr. Peter Reimer, an Advisor to Emerge Knowledge Design, a Canadian company, introduced “Extended Producer Responsibility” (EPR) to the participants, which is designed to deal with products containing toxic substances.

EPR encourages manufacturers to prevent pollution from generating and reduce resource consumption through product design and technical updates during each stage of the product life cycle, which includes the production, use and end of life.

By now, Canada has enforced EPR on five categories of products, which are used oil, tyres, plastic and paper packaging (PPP), household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronic waste. These waste are monitored by an information tracking system.
