With the aim of analyzing and promoting new opportunities initiated by the Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Professor Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho, Director of the International Portuguese Training Centre of Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), will deliver a lecture on the Greater Bay Area and the future of academic cooperation between China and the Portuguese speaking countries.

The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area promulgated in 2019 opens up new opportunities for academic cooperation in the field of research, innovation and education. The document contains multiple references to the Portuguese speaking countries in connection with the priority sectors of innovation in which Macao has a relevant role. These allow the definition of areas and mechanisms of cooperation with high potential. In the scope of the Greater Bay Area being one of the most innovative and economically developed regions of the world in the near future, Sino-Lusophone academic cooperation can reach a new level of excellence.

Professor Joaquim Ramos de Carvalho is the Director of the International Portuguese Training Centre of MPI. Previously he was the Vice-President of the University of Coimbra between 2011 and 2019, and has rich experience in international exchange and cooperation, having been responsible for the development of relations with China, Europe and the Portuguese speaking countries. During his term, the University of Coimbra created the Sino-Lusophone Academy, the Centre of Chinese Studies in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Confucius Institute specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The International Portuguese Training Centre of MPI aims to contribute to the global vision of Macao as a Service Platform between China and the Portuguese speaking countries, by providing a range of training opportunities and cooperation activities, answering the increasing needs of Macao, the European Union and the international community in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and its global implications.

The lecture will take place on 25 February (Thursday), from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Lecture Theatre 1, Wui Chi Building, 1st floor, MPI, in Portuguese, with simultaneous interpretation to Chinese.
