According to statistics released today by the Monetary Authority of Macao, broad money supply continued to grow in September with a stable share of patacas. Meanwhile, both resident deposits and loans increased from a month earlier.
Money supply
Currency in circulation and demand deposits fell 1.3% and 2.5% respectively. M1 thus decreased 2.2% from one month earlier. On the other hand, quasi-monetary liabilities grew 1.6%. The sum of these two items, i.e. M2, increased 1.1% to MOP671.4 billion. On an annual basis, M1 and M2 increased 8.2% and 7.2% respectively. The shares of pataca (MOP), Hong Kong dollar (HKD), renminbi (RMB) and United States dollar (USD) in M2 were 30.9%, 48.9%, 5.4% and 12.9% respectively.
Deposits
Resident deposits grew 1.2% from the preceding month to MOP655.1 billion while non-resident deposits also rose 1.7% to MOP257.7 billion. Meanwhile, public sector deposits with the banking sector increased 0.7% to MOP245.3 billion. As a result, total deposits in the banking sector grew 1.2% from a month earlier to MOP1,158.1 billion. The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total deposits were 18.9%, 48.6%, 4.5% and 25.2% respectively.
Loans
Domestic loans to the private sector grew 1.6% from a month ago to MOP518.5 billion. Analysed by economic sector, “information technology” and “construction and public works” increased at respective rates of 49.3% and 5.9% compared with a quarter ago, whereas “manufacturing industries” and “restaurants, hotels and similar” dropped 14.4% and 5.3% respectively. Meanwhile, external loans rose by 3.4% to MOP573.9 billion. As a result, total loans to the private sector increased 2.5% from a month earlier to MOP1,092.3 billion. The shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in total loans were 16.9%, 48.6%, 6.8% and 25.1% respectively.
Operating ratios
At end-September, the loan-to-deposit ratio for the resident sector rose from 57.3% at end-August to 57.6%. Meanwhile, the ratio for both the resident and non-resident sectors grew from 93.1% to 94.3%. The one-month and three-month current assets to liabilities ratios stood at 50.0% and 49.0% respectively. Concurrently, the non-performing loan ratio stabilised at 0.3%.
