The Consumer Council held “A Dialogue between Young People and the Executive Committee President of the Consumer Council on Honesty and Integrity” earlier, Wong Hon Neng, President of the Executive Committee of the Council, indicates that local young people possess creativity and are practical, young people are suggested to participate in social affairs for the sustainable development of Macao.
The “Dialogue” between young people and the Council was held earlier, participants include students from local tertiary institutions who are trained and to be selected as inspectors for evaluating “Certified Shops”. Wong Hon Neng indicates that honesty and integrity are traditional virtues of Chinese tradition, and an essential principle for being a person or to do business. The Consumer Council established the “Certified Shop” mechanism based on this idea and asks traders who have joined the mechanism to sell genuine goods at fair prices and do business with honesty and integrity. After gradual developments in the past decade, together with the support from shareholders in the society, “Certified Shop” has now become a famous and trusted brand in Macao.
Wong believes that Macao young people are full of creativity and are practical, their diverse characteristics are valuable resources for the sustainable development of a society, the SAR Government strives to create more opportunities for young people to let them participate in social affairs that enable them to know and care about society. The Council therefore recruits “Certified Shop” inspectors not only to improve their ability by training them, but also allow them to learn how a government department runs by letting them participate in the work and offer suggestions. Meanwhile, the Council hopes that young people will be able to learn the importance of doing business with good practices while doing their jobs and take honesty and integrity as the motto when they enter workforce in society.
Wong shares the developments of consumer rights work in Macao on the “Dialogue”, such as the greater need for the Council to work more extensively and professionally due to increased number of inbound tourists. The establishment of the Consumer Arbitration Centre and the recently launched cross-border arbitration service are examples of improved services provided by the Council to consumers.
