The best tradition of Cantonese opera is back in town with the Shade of Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom, a masterpiece penned by the legendary playwright Tong Dik Sang to be performed in six shows from June 14 to 19 at the Macao Cultural Centre’s Grand Auditorium.
Tong’s iconic work is set to be performed by a collective of masters in the field. The play is directed by Pak Suet Sin, the original leading actress when the opera premiered in Hong Kong, back in 1957. The performance takes the audience through a fantastic love story between Zhao Ruzhou, a talented scholar and Xie Suqiu, a well-known courtesan. Throughout this classic’s exciting plot, a sequence of unexpected events will prevent the lovers from seeing each other, until the very final scene.
The main roles in this production are played by the very popular actresses Connie Chan Po Chu (male lead) and Mui Suet Si (female lead), two of the great names in Cantonese Opera. Displayed with an added theatrical modern touch, the production is complemented by a glamorous set and stage design.
Co-organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Macao Government Tourism Office, the Shade of Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom will be staged from June 14 to 19. Tickets will be available from May 6 at CCM’s box office and Macao Ticketing Network outlets at various prices and discounts.
