The Macao Orchestra (OM, from the Portuguese acronym) of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents the concert “Dancing with the Cellos”, part of the Orchestra’s “Music For All” series, on Saturday, 6 May, at the Convention Centre of the Macao Science Centre. Admission is free. The concert is open to the general public.
Cellos take centre stage in the concert “Dancing with the Cellos”, with OM’s Principal Cellist, Vicent Lujia, leading the Orchestra’s remaining seven cellists. Cellos appeared at the end of the 16thcentury and derived from 15th century viols. Among string instruments, some people consider that the sound of the cello is closer to human voice; while others consider the sound of the cello is stable as the voice of a father, because both of them have a similar vocal range and timbre. In addition, comparing with the higher tones of the violin, the cello has a deeper sound and is an irreplaceable instrument in an orchestra. In this cello concert, OM selected a number of musical pieces, including Vivaldi’s Concerto in G minor, Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer, Albeniz’s Sevilla and Bernstein’s Tonight, among others. The Entertainer, a jazz piece, is known as the theme to the 1970’s movie The Sting, while Tonight is one of the songs of the musical West Side Story.
