Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 100 hotels and guesthouses operating in 2013, comprising 67 hotels and 33 guesthouses. Persons engaged increased by 1% year-on-year to 39,909, with 80% of them working in 28 five-star hotels.

Receipts of the hotel industry amounted to MOP 25.30 billion in 2013, up by 15% year-on-year; Receipts from Abroad totalled MOP 4.60 billion (18% of total). Attributable to the increase in number of guests and guest rooms, receipts from Room Sales rose by 17% year-on-year to MOP 11.94 billion, of which five-star hotels shared 79%. Receipts from Food & Beverages and Rental of Space totalled MOP 5.58 billion and MOP 4.71 billion respectively, up by 14% and 23% year-on-year. In view of the popularity of online room reservation, Receipts from Online Business rose significantly by 45% to MOP 571 million.

Expenditure of the hotel industry increased by 10% year-on-year to MOP 21.54 billion; Payments Abroad totalled MOP 2.88 billion (13% of total). Operating Expenses (MOP 10.33 billion), Compensation of Employees (MOP 8.18 billion) and Purchase of Goods & Commission Paid (MOP 3.02 billion) went up by 15%, 5% and 11% respectively. Meanwhile, Non-operating Expenses such as depreciation of fixed assets and interest paid totalled MOP 7.85 billion, up by 10% year-on-year.

Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy increased by 17% year-on-year to MOP 12.15 billion. In the absence of new hotel construction in 2013, Gross Fixed Capital Formation tumbled by 73% year-on-year to MOP 2.26 billion.
