Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export for February 2014 amounted to MOP721 million, up by 25% year-on-year; value of re-exports (MOP599 million) and domestic exports (MOP122 million) rose by 27% and 15% respectively. Total merchandise import was MOP6.07 billion, up by 10% year-on-year. Merchandise trade deficit amounted to MOP5.35 billion for February 2014.
In the first two months of 2014, total value of merchandise export increased by 5% year-on-year to MOP1.66 billion, of which value of re-exports (MOP1.36 billion) and domestic exports (MOP293 million) increased by 5% and 2% respectively. Total value of merchandise import grew by 18% to MOP14.84 billion. Merchandise trade deficit widened to MOP13.19 billion for the first two months of 2014.
Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP1.02 billion), Mainland China (MOP217 million) and the EU (MOP54 million) in the first two months of 2014 increased by 5%, 9% and 19% respectively year-on-year, while export to the USA (MOP59 million) decreased by 20%.
In addition, exports of Non-textiles (MOP1.51 billion) rose by 5% year-on-year, of which exports of Machines, apparatus & parts (MOP280 million) expanded by 54%, but that of Diamond & diamond jewellery (MOP178 million) dropped by 14%. Exports of Textiles & garments (MOP144 million) decreased by 2%, of which exports of Knitted or crocheted garments (MOP49 million) declined by 13%.
By country of origin, merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP4.68 billion) and the EU (MOP3.80 billion) increased by 13% and 19% respectively year-on-year in the first two months of 2014. Imports of Consumer goods rose by 22% to MOP9.75 billion, with imports of Gold jewellery (MOP2.19 billion), Watches (MOP1.45 billion) and Beauty, cosmetic & skin-care products (MOP469 million) increasing by 70%, 86% and 51% respectively.
External merchandise trade reached MOP16.50 billion in the first two months of 2014, up by 17% compared with MOP14.16 billion a year earlier.
