Macau government officially granted two provisional mobile phone licenses, said Ao Man Long, Secretary of Transport and Public Works.Ao Man Long announced on the 18th that "Hutchison" and "SmarTone" will be granted the provisional licneses. He stressed that the decision was based on the experience, financial prospect and capacity in technology development of the 8 bidders.The Secretary made a further explanation that "Hutchison" is the largest moblie phone company in Hong Kong, while "SmarTone" is the first company that provided GSM900/1800 service in the world.On the reason why only two licenses were issued instead of three as originally projected, Ao Man Long indicated that the one of the three projected licenses was reserved for the development of CDMA system which of the bidders had applied for, he also explained that the present decision is in favour of the entire interest and healthy development of the telecommunication market of Macau SAR.Ao Man Long said that the government will introduce positive interference in the operation of three mobile services providers in the market including CTM, which is currently the sole operator of mobile services in Macau Meanwhile, laws to supervise telecommunication services will be drafted shortly, as to introduce a fair environment for all the operators.
