Transport and communications statistics for the first three quarters of 2025

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that licensed motor vehicles in the Macao Special Administrative Region totalled 253,515 as at the end of the third quarter of 2025, up by 0.7% year-on-year. In the first three quarters, cross-border vehicular traffic (8,169,143 trips) rose by 22.5% year-on-year, whereas passenger ferry trips (57,884 trips) and arriving and departing commercial flights at the Macau International Airport (40,797 trips) dropped by 3.1% and 3.8% respectively. As at the end of the third quarter, number of mobile phone subscribers (1,502,744) and internet subscribers (782,946) showed respective growth of 4.4% and 1.6% year-on-year.

New registration of motor vehicles in the first three quarters decreased by 10.2% year-on-year to 8,522, of which 37.1% (3,165) were electric vehicles, up by 7.1 percentage points. In September, new registration of motor vehicles dropped by 30.3% year-on-year to 814 (electric vehicles accounted for 247 or 30.3%). In the first three quarters, traffic accidents fell by 5.2% year-on-year to 11,086, with 4 persons killed and 4,102 persons injured. There were 1,243 traffic accidents in September, which resulted in injuries to 465 persons.

As regards cross-border traffic, cross-border vehicular traffic grew by 22.5% year-on-year to 8,169,143 trips in the first three quarters. Light passenger car trips rose by 24.4% year-on-year to 7,742,484; of which, Hengqin single-plate vehicle trips (1,629,000) and trips made under the “Northbound Travel for Macao Vehicles” policy (1,236,000) went up by 45.4% and 13.1% respectively. In the first three quarters, passenger ferry trips (57,884 trips) and arriving and departing commercial flights at the Macau International Airport (40,797 trips) reduced by 3.1% and 3.8% respectively. In September, cross-border vehicular traffic (932,644 trips) and arriving and departing commercial flights at the Macau International Airport (4,256 trips) increased by 18.4% and 2.6% year-on-year respectively, whereas passenger ferry trips (5,373 trips) fell by 12.5%.

With respect to the volume of cross-boundary cargo, gross weight of containerized cargo by land (53,394 tonnes) grew by 5.4% year-on-year in the first three quarters, whereas port containerized cargo (137,830 tonnes) dropped by 6.1%. Gross weight of air cargo rose by 0.7% year-on-year to 76,760 tonnes, of which gross weight of inward cargo (3,741 tonnes) and transit cargo (3,980 tonnes) expanded by 2.1% and 21.8% respectively, while that of outward cargo (69,039 tonnes) fell slightly by 0.4%. In September, gross weight of containerized cargo by land (6,511 tonnes) and air cargo (9,614 tonnes) increased by 33.7% and 8.1% year-on-year respectively, while that of port containerized cargo (15,274 tonnes) diminished by 7.8%.

As at the end of the third quarter of 2025, number of mobile phone subscribers increased by 4.4% year-on-year to 1,502,744, with postpaid subscribers (1,066,493) and prepaid card subscribers (436,251) rising by 2.6% and 9.1% respectively. Number of fixed-line telephone subscribers went down by 6.4% year-on-year to 77,833. Internet subscribers totalled 782,946 as at the end of the third quarter, up by 1.6% year-on-year. The total duration of internet usage in the first three quarters dropped by 0.6% to 1.31 billion hours, whereas the duration of internet usage in September fell by 5.1% to 144 million hours.
