The “Macao Library Week 2023”, jointly organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), the University of Macau Library and the Macao Library and Information Management Association, will promote a series of reading activities from 15 April to 14 May. The carnival-style promotional days will be held on 22 and 23 April (Saturday and Sunday) at the Macao Cultural Centre, offering a book exchange, booth games and a book fair, among others, so as to encourage more residents to develop a reading habit. All are welcome to participate.

This year, the Library Week will be held on a larger scale with a range of promotional activities in different communities, in order to infuse reading into daily life. From 21 April to 6 May, “Pop-up Library” bookshelves will be set up at various places in the city for the public to read books for free. The bookshelves will be randomly located in different corners of the city, and the public can look for their favourite books just like a treasure hunt through the tips published by the Library on its social media. For the activity “Reading on the Go” on 15, 16, 22 and 23 April (Saturdays and Sundays), several sessions of reading flash mob will be held at various outdoor venues such as the forecourt of the Ruins of St. Paul’s, St. Dominic’s Church, the Former Iec Long Firecracker Factory Walkway, Rotunda de Carlos da Maia and Iao Hon Market Park, bringing a new interactive reading experience by combining literature with music, body movements and storytelling. From 15 to 30 April, the activity “I have coffee, do you have a book?” will collaborate with various cafés in Macao to encourage the public to bring their books and read at the cafés, share their reading experience on new media platforms, and enjoy the pleasure with coffee and books.

In this year’s promotional day, in addition to the well-received “Book Exchange” and “Periodicals Sale”, the initiative will also feature game booths, workshops, exhibitions, talks, and family reading activities. The venue will also be decorated as an interactive reading space with reading areas, artistic installations, interactive shows, and cultural and artistic performances by students from primary, secondary and higher education institutions as well as the Macao Conservatory, with the aim of attracting people with different interests to participate in the event, expanding the target audience and creating a reading atmosphere in the city.
