Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that Receipts of the Construction Sector decreased by 1.9% year-on-year to MOP52.29 billion in 2020, with Receipts from Construction Works Performed (MOP51.2 billion) and Other Receipts (MOP 1.09 billion) dropping by 0.9% and 33.5% respectively. Expenditure of the sector shrank by 1.2% year-on-year to MOP47.91 billion. Gross Surplus of the sector declined by 8.8% to MOP4.38 billion, and Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy fell by 6.0% to MOP13.03 billion. Gross Fixed Capital Formation totalled MOP171 million, down by 38.5%  year-on-year.

A total of 4,039 establishments were operating in the Construction Sector in 2020, an increase of 134 year-on-year. Among them, 1,348 were engaged in construction projects with permits and 2,691 were engaged in simple renovation projects. Total number of persons engaged in the sector decreased by 1,771 year-on-year to 41,045.

Receipts of the establishments engaged in construction projects with permits dropped by 2.3% year-on-year to MOP48.45 billion in 2020, of which Receipts from Construction Works Performed decreased by 1.3% to MOP47.39 billion. Expenditure of these establishments fell by 1.5% to MOP44.48 billion. Gross Surplus dipped by 10.4% to MOP3.97 billion and Gross Value Added went down by 7.2% to MOP11.33 billion.

Based on the project files held by works departments, there were 2,021 construction projects with permits performed in 2020, an increase of 247 year-on-year. Analysed by type of construction project, number of private construction projects rose by 111 to 1,138. Receipts from Construction Works Performed, however, went down by 1.9% year-on-year to MOP31.28 billion owing to a 52.1% decline in receipts from construction of new private residential buildings (MOP3.97 billion); meanwhile, receipts from construction of hotels and entertainment facilities (MOP23.84 billion) saw a growth of 21.6%. Public construction projects totalled 883, up by 136. Receipts from Construction Works Performed (MOP16.11 billion) held steady year-on-year, with receipts from construction of public infrastructure (MOP7.68 billion) rising by 29.0% while those from construction of other public facilities (MOP3.64 billion) declining by 39.1%.

On the other hand, receipts of the establishments undertaking simple renovation projects increased by 3.8% year-on-year to MOP3.84 billion in 2020, of which Receipts from Construction Works Performed rose by 4.2% to MOP3.8 billion. Expenditure of these establishments amounted to MOP3.43 billion, up by 3.0%. Gross Surplus went up by 10.7% to MOP412 million, and Gross Value Added climbed by 2.0% to MOP1.7 billion.

The Construction Sector Survey covers all establishments engaged in construction projects with permits as the main contractor or first-level sub-contractor in 2020, as well as establishments engaged in simple renovation projects.
