In order to strengthen the development and promotion of Internet Protocol IPv6 in Macao, to complement the active promotion of 5G technology commercialization, to further promote the development and construction of the smart city of Macao, and to help promote the construction of an international technology innovation centre in the Greater Bay Area, the Macao Polytechnic Institute (MPI), with the support of the Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT), recently held a seminar on the role of IPv6 in 5G technology development. Associate Professor of the Bachelor of Science in Computing Programme of MPI, Dr. Luo WuMan, was invited to present The Role of IPv6 in 5G Technology Development. Associate Professor of MPI, Dr. Song-Kyoo (Amang) Kim, discussed IPv6 related applications in his presentation, Blockchain for the Internet of Things. The seminar was attended by more than 100 guests, including Prof. Tse Tan Sim, Director of the School of Applied Sciences (ESCA) of MPI, representatives from CTT, as well as teachers and students from the Bachelor of Science in Computing Programme.

Dr. Luo indicated that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is one of the earliest and fastest growing regions to promote the development of smart city through 5G commercialization. Based on the analysis of the global development and impact of 5G, she considered that the 5G commercialization should be firstly promoted in five main areas, including public administration, traffic management, urban infrastructure, tourism and leisure, and medical services. Subsequently, it will expand to other regions in the Greater Bay Area. In her speech, she not only revealed that IPv6 can actively play a key role in the development of 5G, but also suggested some applications of IPv6 in Macao, including the application of research results and the support of commercialization, as well as the cooperation between Macao and the cities in mainland China, especially with other cities in the Greater Bay Area.

IPv6 and 5G are two core elements of the development of smart city. Based on this background, Dr. Kim substantially discussed various applications of Blockchain in IoT network security in his speech, including Blockchain Governance Game (BGG) and Enhanced IoV Security Network (EIoVSN). BGG is a system model for stochastic game frameworks which find the optimal strategy to prevent network failure caused by network attacks; whereas, EIoVSN is the first secure IoT network architecture using BGG.

Prof. Tse stated that ESCA has been committed to cultivating outstanding IT professionals to support the development of smart city in Macao. In 2020, both of the MSc and BSc programmes — “Master of Science in Big Data and Internet of Things” and “Bachelor of Science in Computing” — were awarded accreditation by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). In 2018, the educational project, A New Mode of Internationalized Talent Cultivation — The Construction and Practice of Internationally Recognized Engineers Academic Education won the National Teaching Achievement Award for Higher Education, which was awarded by the Ministry of Education, China. MPI is the first and only higher education institution in Macao to have received this honourable award. Driven by the IET accreditation, the teaching quality, scientific research management and student support services for the two IET-accredited programmes (Master and Bachelor) in ESCA are highly praised and recognized by international academic accreditation institutions. The Bachelor programme aims to cultivate IT professionals for the industries in Macao. The goal of the Master programme is to support the development of smart city in Macao and the education of highly-qualified IT professionals. In addition, the doctorate programme, PhD in Computer Applied Technology, aims to cultivate IT professionals in applied research and technology. These three programmes are currently open for application. For further details, please visit the official website at http://cp.ipm.edu.mo.
