The World Tourism Day, designated on 27 September annually, revolves around the theme of “Tourism and Rural Development” this year. Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) organized activities today (27 September) to celebrate this global tourism occasion with residents and visitors in Macao, including greeting the Lucky Tourists and the traditional Tray Race.

Acting Director of MGTO Ricky Hoi arrived at Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal in the morning to present welcome souvenirs to the Lucky Tourists on the World Tourism Day. Coming from Shenzhen, Mr. Li and his wife were happy to become the Lucky Tourists of the year. They expressed that they had planned in advance for spending a vacation in Macao after reinstatement of issuance of travel permits. They will stay in Macao for three days mainly for shopping and consumption in the city and sightseeing at Cotai District. In addition, souvenirs were distributed to visitors at MGTO’s Tourist Information counters throughout the day.

The traditional Tray Race kicked-off in the afternoon. Each balancing a bottle of Macau Beer on the tray, all contestants in different costumes set off from the Ruins of St. Paul’s, ran down the lanes through the Historic Centre of Macao and delivered the beer safely to the finish line at Senado Square the fastest they could. The Race was filled with fun and excitement, attracting people to take pictures and cheer the runners on.

Over 90 contestants representing 20 local hotels and restaurants participated in the race this year. The first prize in the male category went to Garcia Rhoderick Robledo on behalf of Venetian Cotai, S.A., whereas Liang Lina, also from Venetian Cotai, S.A., won the first prize in the female category. The Best Costume Awards of this year were presented to Cheong Chi and Xian Ling both representing Future Bright Group.

In line with pandemic control measures, all contestants and performers must present valid negative results of COVID-19 nucleic acid tests to gain permission for participation in the activities. In addition, MGTO has made appropriate arrangements for the activities this year in accord with the pertinent guidelines issued by Health Bureau.

Since 1980, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has designated 27 September as the annual World Tourism Day with the objective to promote awareness on the importance of tourism across the international community, especially regarding its social, cultural, political and economic value.
