The Macao Orchestra (OM, from the Portuguese acronym), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, inaugurates its 2020-21 Concert Season, themed around “Footprints of Masters”, in commemoration of the anniversary of the birth and death of numerous music masters from different eras, inviting an array of outstanding musicians and renowned artistic groups to present masterpieces by virtuosos. Tickets for the first four concerts of the new Concert Season will be on sale from 10am on 12 September (Saturday) onwards at the Macau Ticketing Network.

Concert Season kicks off with violinist Vadim Repin’s concert and closes with Verdi opera gala

The new Concert Season kicks off with the “2020-21 Season Opening Concert - Vadim Repin and Macao Orchestra”, in which OM will join hands with internationally acclaimed violinist Vadim Repin, presenting again in Macao a passionate poetic performance with impeccable techniques. In commemoration of the 120th anniversary of the death of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, the Concert Season will close with the “2020-21 Season Closing Concert - Verdi Opera Gala”, in which Italian renowned soprano Maria Agresta and tenor Marco Berti will perform a repertoire of melodious opera arias, drawing OM’s Concert Season to a perfect finale.

World-leading musicians perform in Macao

A variety of captivating performances will be featured in the new Concert Season. The Macao Orchestra and emerging Chinese pianist Tianxu An, well-known for his incredible nimbleness in the International Tchaikovsky Competition, will jointly present the concert “Tchaikovsky No. 1”; Korean coloratura soprano and Grammy award winner Sumi Jo will team up with Austrian conductor Erich Polz to present the “Starry Vienna - New Year Concert” in a Viennese ambience; pianist Steven Osborne, winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist of the Year, will join hands with James Judd, Chief Conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra to present the concert “The British Echo”; Christoph Poppen, Principal Conductor of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of Hong Kong Sinfonietta, will team up with Japanese-American violinist Mayumi Kanagawa to deliver the enchanting and romantic concert “Valentine’s Day Concert - Love in Spring” during the Lantern Festival; hailed for his “flawless centred intonation and ironclad technique”, Chinese cellist Li-Wei Qin, a Silver Medal winner of the Tchaikovsky International Competition, will return to Macao to share his art with music aficionados in the concert “Moments of Qin”; and internationally acclaimed Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son will showcase her stunning virtuosity in the concerts “Piano Chamber Indulgence” and “The Enduring Memories of Paris”.

OM collaborates with MGM Cotai to review a classic by Charlie Chaplin

OM and its special arts partner, MGM, are jointly hosting the film concert “MGM and Macao Orchestra Special Present: Charlie Chaplin – Modern Times” at the MGM Theatre, the first dynamic theatre in Asia. Timothy Brock, a prestigious conductor in the film scoring industry, will join hands with the Macao Orchestra to offer music aficionados a superb audiovisual experience. With the revolutionary technology of the theatre, this concert features enthralling scenes that elevate the entire experience of the audience to a new level.

“Fun Music” concert series promotes diversity of classical music

In the “Fun Music” concert series of the new Concert Season, OM will join hands with Platypus Theatre from Canada, music duo “Igudesman & Joo” formed by Russian violinist Aleksey Igudesman and Korean pianist Hyung-ki Joo, and renowned local theatre company Little Mountain Arts Association to present three concerts designed for young people of different ages and offer a variety of music activities. Through such endeavours, OM seeks to inject creativity into classical music in order to attract the younger generation, develop their interest in classical music and enhance their appreciation abilities.

OM launches “Shared Benefit” to encourage young people to appreciate classical music

In order to encourage young people to appreciate classical music, OM Young Friends who purchase a ticket of the lowest price for any concerts under the “Shining Virtuosos”, “Maestros with Charisma” and “Festive Delights” series can buy another ticket of the same price and concert for MOP 1. Seats are limited and tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. OM aims therefore to make classical music concerts regular leisure activities for young people.

Various ticket discount packages are offered in appreciation of the support of music aficionados

Tickets for the first four concerts of the upcoming Concert Season, including the “2020-21 Season Opening Concert – Vadim Repin and Macao Orchestra”, “The Magnificent Baroque”, “A Night with the World's Top Trombonist” and “Tchaikovsky No. 1”, will be on sale from 10am on 12 September (Saturday) at the Macau Ticketing Network. The date of ticket sales for other concerts will be announced in due course. Please visit the Macao Orchestra’s official website or the Macau Ticketing Network for updates. In the first 14 days of ticket sales for each concert, a 40% early bird discount will be offered on tickets for all concerts; after the first 14 days, a 30% discount will be offered when purchasing four or more tickets at the same time in the “Along with the Musical Joy” promotion or upon the purchase of tickets for any concerts for “OM Friends”, “CCM Friends”, “Friends of MAM” and “Friends of the Macao Chinese Orchestra”. A 40% discount will be offered on the purchase of 4 or more tickets for any concerts in the “Chamber Voyage” series. Holders of BOC Credit Card or BOC card will receive a 30% discount on tickets for special programmes, as well as a 20% discount on tickets for all non-special programmes. A 20% discount on tickets for all concerts will be available for purchases with a valid Macao Teacher Card, MasterCard, Visa Card or UnionPay Card issued by BCM Bank, OCBC Wing Hang Bank or Tai Fung Bank. A 50% off will be offered to holders of a valid full-time student card, Macao Senior Citizen Card or Disability Assessment Registration Card. In addition, it is the first time that mascot “Agu”, IC’s Cultural Ambassador, joins hands with OM to launch exquisite, limited edition ticket wallet. Ticket wallets can be obtained at the Macau Ticketing Network outlets for every ticket purchase over MOP380 (net price calculated after discounts), and can be obtained cumulatively while stocks last.
