Che Hio Ieong, a senior instructor in the Department of Communication at the University of Macau (UM), recently published a new book titled ‘Discipline and Desire – The Dark History of the Relationship Between Human Beings and Animals’. In the book, Che discusses various aspects of the relationship between human beings and animals from a historical perspective.

Divided into nine chapters, the book covers various topics, including hunting and domestication, animals and totems, animals and food, zoos, pet culture, animal ethnics, and animal protection laws. Different research methods were used in the writing of this book, including different theoretical perspectives, archival studies, content analysis, and one-on-one interviews.

Che obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Chengchi University in Taiwan. She earned her DEA (Degree of Profound Studies) in history and civilisations from the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in France, and her PhD degree from the University of Paris VIII. She teaches various subjects at UM, including news and journalism, global media culture, Chinese news writing, media law and ethics, and Chinese publication.
