The “Summit on Chinese Central SOEs Supporting Macao as Co-operation Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries” will take place in Macao on 31 May. The Summit is hosted by the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) and is organised by the Secretariat for Economy and Finance of the MSAR, with the support of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the MSAR. The Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute is co-organiser of the event. The advantages and know-how that Chinese central enterprises have in terms of technology, capital, human resources and in the promotion of social responsibility can provide precious experience to help Macao accelerate the construction of a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries and promote mutually-beneficial collaboration between Mainland China, Macao and Portuguese-speaking Countries.

China’s 12thand 13th  Five-Year Plans clearly supported Macao in the building of a commercial and trade co-operation service platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. With the strong support of the Central Government, the MSAR Government is actively following up and appreciating its functions and role as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, in a bid to diversify Macao’s economy. Given the fact that State -owned enterprises actively adopt the “going out” strategy, under market-based principles, they successfully promote the rapid development of industrial standards for all the co-operating parties.

The Summit is themed: “Utilising the function of Macao as a co-operation platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, encouraging State -owned enterprises to join Macao enterprises in going to Portuguese-speaking Countries, and participating in the construction of China’s ‘Belt and Road’ Initiative”. During the Summit, in-depth discussions will be held covering several topics, including: “how to strengthen collaboration with Portuguese-speaking Countries under the “Belt and Road” framework” and “how to utilise Macao’s function as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries to assist Mainland China and Macao enterprises in ‘going out’”. It is hoped that through this Summit, the interaction between State -owned enterprises and Macao enterprises can be strengthened. With the advantages that State -owned enterprises have – including human resources and an extensive network – it is expected that Macao’s role as a platform will be strengthened, actively supporting the collaboration between State -owned enterprises and Macao enterprises to jointly explore Portuguese-speaking Countries’ markets, seeking opportunities to co-operate, enhancing the openness of Macao and creating the path for economic diversification and sustainable development making use of the unique characteristics of Macao.

The Summit has invited more than 70 State -owned enterprises, including financial ones, private companies from Mainland China, local enterprises and representatives from business associations, as well as enterprises from Portuguese-speaking Countries. The Summit will have keynote speeches, a contract signing ceremony and discussion sessions. The Summit will take place in Macao, and will support the building of a platform between State -owned enterprises and Macao enterprises and help Macao achieve sustainable development with a diversified economy, as well as enhancing further the transformation of Macao into a commercial and trade co-operation service platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.
