Demographic statistics for the 1st quarter of 2017

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population was 648,300 as at end-March 2017, an increase of 3,400 quarter-to-quarter; female population (341,600) accounted for 52.7% of the total.

A total of 1,560 live births were delivered in the first quarter of 2017, a decrease of 397 or 20.3% quarter-to-quarter. Male babies totalled 787 and the sex ratio at birth stood at 101.8, corresponding to 101.8 male babies per 100 female babies.

Mortality decreased by 39 quarter-to-quarter to 499. The top three underlying causes of death were Neoplasms (159), Diseases of the Circulatory System (146) and Diseases of the Respiratory System (103).

In the first quarter of 2017, there were 1,211 Chinese immigrants, up by 423 quarter-to-quarter. Individuals granted right of abode totalled 411, an increase of 15. Non-resident workers totalled 179,879 at the end of the first quarter, up by 2,241.

A total of 1,094 cases of marriage registration were recorded in the first quarter, up by 115 quarter-to-quarter.
