Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitor arrivals in package tours increased by 7.7% year-on-year to 721,104 in May 2013. Visitors arrivals in package tours mainly came from Mainland China (547,803), with 174,678 coming from Guangdong Province, followed by those from Taiwan, China (43,926); Hong Kong (30,048) and the Republic of Korea (25,011). In the first five months of 2013, visitors in package tours totalled 3,785,408, up by 10.7% year-on-year.
Outbound residents using services of travel agencies increased by 20.1% year-on-year to 113,268 in May this year; those travelling in package tours totalled 41,717, with Mainland China; Thailand and Taiwan, China being the main destinations. In the first five months of 2013, outbound residents increased by 26.1% year-on-year to 593,798, of which 218,664 travelled in package tours.
There were 99 hotels and guesthouses operating at the end of May 2013, providing 28,065 rooms, up by 16.4% year-on-year; guest rooms of 5-star hotels accounted for 66.5% of the total.
In May 2013, guests checking into hotels and guesthouses rose by 20.3% year-on-year to 907,831 guests; those staying in 5-star hotels soared by 43.9%, at 562,281. The average length of stay of guests decreased by 0.1 night year-on-year to 1.3 nights. The majority of guests came from Mainland China (59.2% of total) and Hong Kong (16.0%). The average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 77.6%, with that of 4-star hotels at 80.5%. In the first five months of 2013, number of guests increased by 16.9% year-on-year to 4,329,662; the average occupancy rate stood at 79.4%, down by 2.5 percentage points.
In the first five months of 2013, visitor-guests took up 71.6% of the total number of overnight visitors, higher than the 64.6% in the same period of 2012.
