Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that Total Receipts of the Construction Sector decreased by 18.8% year-on-year to MOP65.91 billion in 2017. Value of Construction Work Done reduced by 19.3% to MOP64.02 billion, attributable to the completion of several hotels and entertainment facilities in 2016 and a relatively low number of construction projects of the same scale in 2017. Meanwhile, Intermediate Consumption and Labour Cost amounted to MOP50.63 billion and MOP9.97 billion respectively in 2017, down by 17.9% and 17.3%. Gross Surplus, which equals Total Receipts less Total Expenditure (Intermediate Consumption and Labour Cost), of the sector dropped by 28.6% to MOP5.31 billion. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy totalled MOP15.28 billion, down by 21.6%.

A total of 3,061 establishments were operating in the Construction Sector in 2017, an increase of 141 year-on-year. Total number of persons engaged fell by 3,356 to 41,960. Establishments engaging in construction projects with permits (1,258) decreased by 14, with number of persons engaged (32,973) dropping by 5,497. Meanwhile, establishments undertaking simple renovation projects increased by 155 to 1,803, with 8,987 persons engaged, up by 2,141.

For the establishments engaging in construction projects with permits, Value of Construction Work Done shrank by 20.3% year-on-year to MOP60.90 billion. In addition, Total Receipts (MOP62.77 billion), Intermediate Consumption (MOP48.81 billion) and Labour Cost (MOP8.93 billion) declined by 19.7%, 18.4% and 21.1% respectively. Gross Surplus of these establishments fell by 28.8% to MOP5.03 billion and Gross Value Added dropped by 24.1% to MOP13.95 billion.

There were 1,538 construction projects with permits being carried out by the establishments in 2017, up by 106 year-on-year. Analysed by type of construction projects, number of private projects rose by 76 to 966; yet, Value of Construction Work Done went down by 23.9% year-on-year to MOP49.02 billion, with the value of construction of hotels and entertainment facilities (MOP31.59 billion) falling by 34.1% while that of new private residential buildings (MOP13.10 billion) rising by 17.4%. Meanwhile, number of public works expanded by 30 to 572; Value of Construction Work Done, however, decreased by 1.3% year-on-year to MOP11.88 billion, of which the value of construction of public housing (MOP1.81 billion) and medical & health projects (MOP1.45 billion) reduced by 19.8% and 33.2% respectively, while that of Light Rapid Transit & roads grew by 37.9% to MOP3.41 billion.

In terms of location, a total of 1,171 construction projects were carried out in the Macao Peninsula, and Value of Construction Work Done decreased by 11.6% year-on-year to MOP17.71 billion. Meanwhile, 190 projects were carried out in Taipa, with Value of Construction Work Done rising by 17.2% to MOP8.60 billion; 86 projects were in Cotai, with Value of Construction Work Done falling by 28.5% to MOP29.67 billion; 91 projects were in Coloane, and Value of Construction Work Done totalled MOP4.91 billion, down by 34.9%.

As regards the establishments undertaking simple renovation projects, Total Receipts increased by 5.3% year-on-year to MOP3.14 billion in 2017, of which Value of Construction Work Done (MOP3.12 billion) saw an increase of 5.4%. Meanwhile, Intermediate Consumption (MOP1.82 billion) decreased by 3.0% while Labour Cost (MOP1.05 billion) grew by 41.1%. Gross Surplus of these establishments totalled MOP278 million, down by 24.3% year-on-year, whereas Gross Value Added increased by 19.4% to MOP1.32 billion.
