The second review of the “2017 Subsidy Programme for Fashion Design on Sample Making”, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), was completed and a total of eight candidates were selected. IC will grant each eligible candidate a subsidy of up to MOP160,000 for sample making and promotional works.

IC launched the Subsidy Programme for Fashion Design on Sample Making to continuously facilitate the development of Macao’s fashion design industry. This year, a total of 26 entries were received, including 23 individual entries and 3 group entries. Following the initial and second reviews, the adjudicating panel selected the following eight entrants: Lao Ka Weng, Cheang Man Cheng and Mac Chi Lon, Tam Chi Kit, Wai Chin Seong, David Siu, Cheang Chi Tat, Lo Ka Heng and Choi Wai Leng, Wong Ha and Cheong Kuan Peng.

The adjudicating panel was comprised of fashion design, retail, production and training professionals from Macao and Hong Kong, including Terry Sio Un I, Chairman of the Rainbow Group; Victoria Kuan Chi Ping, Deputy Director-General of the Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Centre; José Tang Kuan Meng, member of the Committee of Cultural Industries and Vice President of the Industrial Association of Macau; Walter Ma, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Fashion Designers Association and Raymond Au, consultant of the Macao Fashion Gallery.

The Subsidy Programme for Fashion Design on Sample Making has been held yearly since 2013, attracting new entrants with each new edition. This year, 30% of the entries were submitted by new entrants; more than 70% of the entrants have already registered trademarks for their fashion brands, which reflects the importance given by local fashion designers to the protection of their intellectual property.

Some of the adjudicators who have participated in the selection works in previous years remarked that the applications are becoming increasingly practical and catering more to market demands with clearer directions of brand development. For enquiries about the results of the Programme, please contact the staff member of IC, Ms Lam, through tel. no. (853) 8399 6205 during office hours.
