Guard against chikungunya fever: Be aware of signs and symptoms, follow the “3 Tips for Mosquito Prevention”
Chikungunya fever is transmitted by Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. It does not spread directly from person to person. Clinical manifestations primarily include fever, rash, and severe joint pain (often affecting the small joints of the wrists, knees, ankles, and fingers). Chikungunya fever usually lasts for 5 to 7 days. While symptoms are mild in most cases, some infected persons may experience persistent joint pain for 2 to 3 months. If symptoms occur, medical attention should be sought immediately. Chikungunya fever is a preventable and controllable infectious disease, and elimination of mosquito breeding grounds is the key to its prevention. Since the vector Aedes mosquitoes mainly breed in small amounts of clean, standing water (especially in artificial containers), removing standing water is the most effective measure for mosquito control. The Health Bureau urges the public to follow the “3 Tips for Mosquito Prevention” to help eradicate chikungunya fever and other mosquito-borne diseases: Prevent mosquito breeding at home: Regularly clear stagnant water in and around your workplace and home to eliminate mosquito breeding sites; Keep mosquitoes out: Use window screens, mosquito nets or turn on the air conditioner at home to reduce the chance of being bitten indoors; Prevent mosquito bites outdoors: When outdoors, wear light-coloured, long-sleeved tops and trousers, and use mosquito repellent on exposed skin and clothing to prevent mosquito bites. Electoral Affairs Commission stepping up preparations for campaign period
The Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election is stepping up preparations for the start of the electoral campaign period, ensuring the provision of necessary platforms and channels for electoral publicity, in order to guarantee fair campaigning and promotion for all candidate lists. The Chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission, Mr Seng Ioi Man, today gave the information to the press after a work meeting of the Commission. The Electoral Affairs Commission also finalised, during today’s work meeting, the ballot design for this year’s election. Mr Seng said that blue grid lines used previously – highlighting the stamping boxes on the ballot papers – will be retained, though with increased vertical spacing between candidate list boxes to enhance clarity and reduce the risk of invalid ballots. The designated “check mark” stamp remains the only valid tool for marking ballots: using other instruments will render the ballot invalid. The campaign period will run from 30 August to 12 September, a total of 14 days, during which candidate lists may conduct promotional activities. Mr Seng noted there is still one more month before the campaign period begins. Candidates are urged to prepare their political platforms and ideas, for promotion to the public during campaign period through fair competition, in order to secure voter support on election day, i.e., 14 September. To ensure publicity platforms are presented equitably, the Electoral Affairs Commission has been pressing ahead with the following measures: 1) a decision to provide 25 designated street notice boards for candidate lists to display campaign materials; 2) a decision to provide 18 campaign venues, with time slots divided equally among candidate lists through a lottery system; 3) suggestions to the Chief Executive regarding the provision of television and radio airtime on TDM’s Chinese- and Portuguese-language channels, with order of usage to be decided by lottery; 4) the Electoral Affairs Commission will hold a ceremony on the first day of the campaign period, offering a fair promotional platform to all candidate lists; 5) the Electoral Affairs Commission will print summaries of the respective political platforms of the candidate lists for the direct and indirect elections, and have them distributed across Macao for the public to access; and 6) in accordance with the 1/CAEAL/2025 Guideline, each candidate list can use a maximum of eight trucks to deliver promotional messages in audio format, with strict regulations on times of day and volume limits, and with safety inspections by relevant authorities. Mr Seng issued a reminder that candidate lists should pay close attention the 1/CAEAL/2025 Guideline, issued in March, which outlined campaign regulations and standards. Regarding the prohibition on campaigning during the ongoing non-campaign period, Mr Seng noted that while some complaints have been registered, there has been overall compliance with the rules. The Electoral Affairs Commission would continue collaborating with law enforcement agencies to monitor adherence to the rules. He reiterated the importance of strict legal compliance during the period of prohibition on campaigning, urging all parties to uphold electoral integrity and ensure the 8th Legislative Assembly Election proceeds in a lawful, fair, impartial, and clean manner.

Seize the Summer! Macau New Neighbourhood to Host Summer Family Carnival Next Saturday
Coinciding with the summer holidays, the Hengqin “Macau New Neighbourhood” (MNN) will hold the “Neighbourhood Fun Fair: Seize the Summer” Family Carnival at MNN Lotus Square from 12:00 to 18:00 on 2 August (Saturday). The event will feature summer-themed games, interactive experiences, and markets, offering over 800 gifts and prizes. We warmly invite the general public to visit the MNN in person and enjoy the summer break. Dialysis Center of Macao Union Medical Center officially commences services
The Dialysis Center of the Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Center of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (hereinafter referred to as “Macao Union Medical Center”) has officially launched its dialysis services recently. In the initial phase, it provides maintenance hemodialysis for Macao residents referred by the Health Bureau. Hemodialysis is a treatment used to remove metabolic waste and impurities from the blood through artificial means when the kidneys are no longer able to function due to disease or injury. According to health statistics published by the Statistics and Census Service, a total of 131,635 dialysis treatments were provided in Macao in 2024. With the city’s rising aging population and the increasing incidence of chronic kidney disease among younger individuals, the demand for dialysis services continues to grow. Therefore, it is believed that with its establishment, the Dialysis Center of the Hospital can provide more comprehensive support to local patients and offer a geographically accessible treatment option for residents of the Cotai district who used to rely on public healthcare services. The Dialysis Center spans 1,400 square meters and is equipped with some of the most advanced medical facilities available in the Greater Bay Area. It features a warm and comfortable treatment environment and employs a smart information platform to achieve electronic management of medical records and orders. Led by experts from the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), the medical team provides a range of dialysis modalities, including hemodialysis (HD) and hemofiltration (HF), as well as the establishment and maintenance of dialysis access to meet patients’ treatment needs in different stages. At the same time, leveraging the strengths of the PUMCH in diagnosis and treatment, the Dialysis Center integrates dialysis therapy, disease monitoring, complication management and the maintenance of dialysis access to deliver one-stop diagnosis and treatment services. Looking ahead, the Hospital will continue to expand its medical equipment and the capacity of diagnosis and treatment services, actively easing the burden on the public healthcare system. By the end of 2025, it is estimated to provide approximately 1,200 regular dialysis treatments per month. The Macao Union Medical Center will also continue to refine its service model so as to deliver higher-quality and more compassionate care, as well as safeguard the health of Macao residents.

Visitor arrivals for the first half of 2025
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that there were 19,218,540 visitor arrivals in the first half of 2025, up by 14.9% year-on-year. Same-day visitors (11,182,913) and overnight visitors (8,035,627) rose by 25.8% and 2.6% year-on-year respectively. Meanwhile, the cumulative average length of stay of visitors decreased by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.1 days, due to the growth in the proportion of same-day visitors in the total number of visitors. The average duration of stay for same-day visitors (0.2 day) and overnight visitors (2.3 days) both remained unchanged year-on-year. As regards source of visitors, visitors from the Chinese mainland increased by 19.3% year-on-year to 13,767,810 in the first half year, with those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (7,412,318) rising by 24.6%. Among the Mainland visitors, 867,492 travelled under the “one trip per week measure”, 241,257 under the “multiple-entry measure” and 72,149 under the “tourist group multi-entry measure”. In addition, visitors from the nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Greater Bay Area rose by 25.7% year-on-year to 7,016,216, driven by an upsurge of 57.0% in the number of visitors from Zhuhai. Visitors from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (3,647,321) and the Taiwan region (461,735) went up by 1.1% and 14.0% year-on-year respectively. International visitors totalled 1,341,674 in the first half year, up by 14.8% year-on-year. Regarding the Southeast Asian markets, visitors from the Philippines (273,715), Indonesia (104,608), Malaysia (90,259) and Thailand (80,932) rose by 16.8%, 13.8%, 6.0% and 8.8% year-on-year respectively, while those from Singapore (54,543) decreased by 0.7%. With respect to the South Asian markets, visitors from India (58,309) increased by 6.2% year-on-year. For the Northeast Asian markets, visitors from the Republic of Korea (282,151) and Japan (76,435) grew by 21.7% and 23.5% respectively. As regards long-haul markets, visitors from the USA (76,457) went up by 9.9% year-on-year. Analysed by checkpoint, number of visitor arrivals by land (15,780,124; 82.1% of total) grew by 20.4% year-on-year in the first half year; among them, those arriving through the checkpoint of Border Gate and the Hengqin port increased by 25.5% and 40.6% respectively. Meanwhile, visitor arrivals by sea (1,978,499; 10.3%) and by air (1,459,917; 7.6%) dropped by 5.2% and 4.1% respectively. In June 2025, number of visitor arrivals rose by 13.3% year-on-year to 2,891,003; same-day visitors (1,611,641) and overnight visitors (1,279,362) grew by 22.5% and 3.6% respectively. Meanwhile, the average length of stay of visitors remained at 1.2 days year-on-year. The duration of stay for same-day visitors (0.2 day) remained unchanged while overnight visitors (2.4 days) increased by 0.1 day year-on-year.

Electoral Affairs Commission deliberates on design of polling booths
Polling booths to be used in the Legislative Assembly Election on 14 September will be equipped with semi-transparent curtains to ensure ballot secrecy, while also allowing polling station staff to conduct appropriate monitoring for any sign of illegal activities. The Chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election, Mr Seng Ioi Man, today informed the press about the step, after a work meeting of the Commission to deliberate on issues relating to the election. Each polling booth would be equipped with a dedicated stamp for marking ballots, a desktop light, and posters demonstrating the correct method of marking a ballot. The posters would also provide a reminder that photography – particularly in relation to marked ballots – is strictly prohibited. Mr Seng noted that over 770 voting booths would be set up at polling stations used for the direct and indirect elections, with the number representing an increase of more than 80 compared to the previous Legislative Assembly Election. The aim was to allow more voters to cast their ballots simultaneously, reducing waiting times. All stations would also include booths accessible to persons with disabilities. On 19 July, the Electoral Affairs Commission held a lottery procedure in public to determine the order in which candidate lists will appear on the ballot paper. Also on that day, the Electoral Affairs Commission, alongside representatives of the Commission Against Corruption (CCAC), held a briefing for representatives of the candidate lists. This was to clarify regulations on campaign activities, notifications for promotional events, and obligations to declare non-campaign welfare activities organised by associations or candidates. Detailed guidelines were provided on the use and distribution of campaign materials, said Mr Seng. Candidate lists are required to submit – for Electoral Affairs Commission oversight in collaboration with the CCAC – information on three categories of promotional items. They are: 1) materials for public distribution, which may display the candidate list’s name, number, and logo; 2) items to be distributed at rallies, and which may use the candidate list’s designated colours but must exclude names, numbers, or logos; and 3) campaign staff attire and equipment. The latter includes two types of item, i.e., items displaying the candidate list’s name, number, and logo; and items using the candidate list’s colours without its names, numbers, or logos. All candidate lists must submit their promotional item declarations to the Electoral Affairs Commission by 27 August, specifying quantities, cost price, and other details. Expenditure on these materials must be recorded as part of the campaign budget. Campaign materials may only be distributed during the official campaign period from 30 August to 12 September, and should not be bundled as “gift packs”. Items deemed to have welfare-related benefits are prohibited, to avoid vote-buying violations. The Electoral Affairs Commission will issue warnings if such items are identified in the review of declaration. Mr Seng also talked about staffing arrangements on election day. More than 1,300 personnel – including officials assigned to vote-counting and the issuing of ballot papers to voters, as well as ballot officers – would be deployed across all polling stations. Following a recruitment drive among public departments, 2,200 individuals have volunteered. The Electoral Affairs Commission has completed selection procedures and will conduct training sessions in August to ensure all staff can perform their duties lawfully and efficiently, facilitating smooth voting and swift vote counting after polls close. There would be in addition approximately 1,500 staff to provide logistical support and manage the crowds at polling locations. Multiple public departments would also collaborate on election day, to ensure the successful completion of the 8th Legislative Assembly Election.

【Impactful platform】 “2025 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” welcomes all with global flavors
【MGTO】“2025 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” concludes on a high note The “2025 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” (referred to as the “Fest”) attracted about 100,000 participants over 9 days. The total count of impressions exceeded 7.8 million on MGTO’s social media platforms. The event manifested Macao’s glamour of “tourism + gastronomy” and the city’s impact as an international exchange platform. Record-Breaking Participation: 62% of Creative Cities of Gastronomy gather in Macao Organized by Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the Fest was originally scheduled to run from 11 to 20 July, concluded one day ahead (19 July) of the scheduled date owing to the weather conditions. The Fest this year centered on the theme “Spices and Herbs”, featured three major highlights namely “International Gastronomy Promenade”, “City of Gastronomy Showcase” and “International Gastronomy Forum, Macao”. At present, there are 56 UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy around the world, among which, delegates of 35 Creative Cities of Gastronomy converged in Macao to present a splendid feast of international culinary cultures. This marked a new record, surpassing last year’s participation. 28 official social media platforms to maximize exposure The Office launched promotional initiatives for the Fest, besides diverse promotions through television and radio stations, newspaper and magazines, bus exterior and outdoor advertisements among other channels, MGTO also spotlighted the event via its 28 official platforms on social media such as WeChat, Weibo, Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Tiktok, Twitter, Kakao and Line. Seven promotional posts were released through the Office’s official account on WeChat and were forwarded 17.87 million times. In addition, Weibo, Xiaohongshu and Weixin Channels conducted live streams; the total volume of impressions exceeded 7.8 million on MGTO’s social media accounts, the view counts and pageviews totaled 3 million. Moreover, 37 KOLs from overseas, the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong were invited promote the Fest through live streams as well as graphics, written and video posts. A total of seven live streams and over 58 promotional posts were released, with total volume of impressions exceeded 29.4 million. Interactive game on WeChat + special offers through e-payment platforms MGTO presented “Spice Party”, the interactive game of the “2025 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” on its WeChat mini-program “MGTO’s Interactive Zone”. 227,530 participants participated in the game which widened the event’s publicity. The Office also partnered with Macau Pass, Bank of China Macau Branch as well as Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Macau) to promote the event and launch special offers for consumers through e-payment platforms. Solicit event feedback via various channels Through questionnaires and application of the big data, MGTO collected opinions from visitors and residents, seeks to optimize the program, format and promotional campaign of the event in the future. According to the survey results, both visitors and residents rated their overall satisfaction with this year’s event as "satisfied" level, demonstrating its positive impact. “International Gastronomy Promenade” presents delicacies from worldwide The “International Gastronomy Promenade” featured 105 food booths presented by 15 Creative Cities of Gastronomy from across the globe, presented a variety of enchanting delicacies and unique food cultures. 1,000 dining seats were provided at five catering zones along the Promenade, alongside a Brew-and-Chill Zone by day and night and a game zone. 186 sessions of artistic and cultural performances were held to spark lively vibes at the Fest. “City of Gastronomy Showcase” – culinary arts across territories The “City of Gastronomy Showcase” gathered acclaimed chefs from 29 UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy around the globe echoing the theme of “Spices and Herbs”, the chefs prepared unique delicacies with an exquisite blend of spices and herbs commonly used in Macao in 52 sessions of culinary showcase. About 2,900 food samples were distributed in total to share the authentic tastes and culinary cultures of these cities. “International Gastronomy Forum, Macao” plays an international exchange platform Held on 14 July under the theme of “The Spice of Life: Macao’s Culinary Connections”, the “International Gastronomy Forum, Macao” (referred to as the “Forum”) brought together over 250 attendees including representatives of over 30 UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy from worldwide, four Creative Cities in other fields and two candidate cities from the Chinese mainland, two Culture Cities of East Asia 2025 (Huzhou (China) and Anseong (Korea)), representatives of the six integrated resort enterprises, culinary experts and scholars, tourism and catering professionals from near and far, together with members of the public. Both winners of the Best Chef Awards in 2024, the two keynote speakers Jordy Navarra and Varun Totlani are internationally acclaimed for their excellence in culinary arts. Under their culinary leadership, both restaurants have won recognition in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. Besides, 15 culinary experts and leading professionals in the catering industry from near and far shared their valuable experience and insights that ignited innovative thinking from diverse angles through three panel discussion sessions. Macao also arranged for the Exchange Meeting for UCCN Creative Cities Network Members and the Online-Offline Meeting for Creative Cities of Gastronomy on the day of the Forum, which functioned further as an international platform. Visit community restaurants Collaborate with chefs of IRs Exchange with Universities During the Fest, a total of 201 delegates of the Creative Cities of Gastronomy and Chinese member cities of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in other creative fields paid a familiarization visit to local communities to learn more about Macao’s vibrant food culture and diversity of “tourism +”. Chefs from 13 Creative Cities of Gastronomy engaged in in-depth exchanges at four restaurants in the community. In addition, MGTO facilitated collaboration projects between chefs from 6 Creative Cities of Gastronomy and 6 Macao’s integrated resort enterprises, which fostered preservation, innovation and exchange in culinary culture among Creative Cities of Gastronomy. Additionally, a Macao hotel specially invited chefs from five "Cities of Gastronomy" to collaborate and co-create a joint signature dinner. The Fest fosters multi-dimensional exchanges between Macao and other "Cities of Gastronomy," enhancing network collaboration and shared success while offering diverse benefits to participants worldwide. Riding on their visit to Macao, delegates of 2 Creative Cities of Gastronomy, Östersund (Sweden) and Santa Maria da Feira (Portugal), met with different universities in Macao, including the Macao University of Tourism and the Macao Polytechnic University, for a dialogue on future cooperation opportunities. Dedicated to the implementation of the “1 + 4” development strategy for adequate economic diversification, the “2025 International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” brought together delegates of UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy from worldwide, several Creative Cities in other fields and candidate cities from the Chinese mainland, along with Culture Cities of East Asia 2025. MSAR Government, Bank of China sign strategic cooperation agreement
The Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government and the Bank of China Limited recently signed the “Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Agreement on Bank of China’s Services to the Macao Special Administrative Region Government”. The signing ceremony was held at the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, and was witnessed by the Chief Executive, Mr Sam Hou Fai, and the Chairman of Bank of China, Mr Ge Haijiao. The agreement was signed on behalf of the two sides by the Secretary for Economy and Finance, Mr Tai Kin Ip, and Executive Vice President of Bank of China, Mr Wu Jian. In a separate meeting prior to the signing ceremony, the Chief Executive and Mr Ge exchanged views on: deepening strategic cooperation; leveraging high-quality financial services to support Macao’s real economy; facilitating the transformation and upgrading of key industries; and promoting the high-quality development of Macao’s modern finance services. Mr Sam thanked Bank of China for its longstanding support to Macao and its economic development, particularly in advancing the MSAR Government’s efforts for appropriate economic diversification, and for the Cooperation Zone’s development. He noted that Bank of China, as one of the country’s longest-operating and most globally integrated state-owned commercial banks, has been rooted in Macao for 75 years, making outstanding contributions to the MSAR’s financial and economic growth. Mr Sam expressed his expectation that Bank of China would align with Macao’s appropriate economic diversification strategy and the MSAR Government’s policy objectives, focusing on financial services to bolster the real economy. This included accelerating the high-quality development of modern finance, fostering financial innovation aligned with international standards, and actively participating in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. The goal was jointly to establish a higher-level platform for opening up and to provide residents with enhanced financial services, he added. Macao officials attending the meeting included: Secretary Tai; the Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms Chan Kak; and Acting Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Monetary Authority of Macao, Mr Vong Sin Man. Macao Special Administrative Region adjusts issuance of travel alerts
The number of countries and travel destinations covered by the Macao SAR Travel Alert System is now expanded to 110 in total. Among the new addition of countries or destinations covered by the Travel Alert System, Level 3 travel alert is issued for Iran, Lebanon and Syria while Level 2 travel alert is issued for Pakistan. Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has recently held explanation sessions for the Monetary Authority of Macao, local travel agencies and insurance companies, to solicit their opinions and familiarize them with the information involved and the optimized webpage about travel alerts. In the future, regular evaluations will be conducted upon the issuance of travel alerts for countries and travel destinations along with continuous optimization of the travel alert system. The classification of travel alerts issued by the Macao Special Administrative Region is as follows: Level 3 Travel Alert - Avoid travel: Presence of an extreme threat to personal safety. Macao residents planning to travel to or currently in the destination should be aware of the severe situation and limits on official assistance that can be provided there. They are advised to avoid travelling to the destination, and, in certain situations, leave the destination. Level 2 Travel Alert - Reconsider non-essential travel: The threat to personal safety is elevated. Macao residents planning to travel to or currently in the destination should reconsider their itinerary or need to travel at this time. They are advised to avoid non-essential itinerary or travel to the destination. Level 1 Travel Alert – Exercise caution: There is an imminent threat to personal safety.
